Book Reviews of The Gate HouseBook Review: not worth the effort or money Summary: 1 Stars
Demille phoned this one in. The writing was high school level and the editing was worse. Darn!
Book Review: okay read Summary: 3 Stars
i have enjoyed most of nelson demille's books including 'the gold coast'. i must have forgotten, though, what a pompous ass john sutter was and how effortless life can be for the inveterate snobs of the world. that said, 'the gate house' is a decent but irksome read (am not sure how many times we need to be reminded of what susan did with frank). i definitely recommend reading it, but don't expect a compelling, consuming read and don't expect to like any of the protagonists. do expect the periodic urge to slap any one of them.
Book Review: overlong and redundant Summary: 2 Stars
When I saw this book for sale, I had to read it right away, and not wait for the cheaper paperback. So I pre-ordered it. I love DeMille's books and have, of course, read and loved The Gold Coast. The Iron Gate is a book of repeats. fillers, and bad wise cracks by the hero, Sutter. I am so disappointed, I'm actually angry that this book was foisted on believing and trusting fans. Sutter's endless analizing his history regarding his marriage, he says the same thing over and over.Ad nauseum.sp? I wish I could get my money back.
Book Review: page turner, because it is so dull Summary: 1 Stars
I have read all of Deville's book, and looked forward to enjoying this one. However I found it to absolutely dreadful, dull, verbouse, and a page turner because he has the same dialog on every page. You want to skip every page, and turn to the last page to see what happens. He could have cut half of the pages and it still would be too long and boring.
The only good part of it is the description of the Creek Club, Locust Valley, and the story of the estates there.
Save your money, do not buy this book, and hope the Deville comes to his senses and writes another good book.
Book Review: redundant. repetitive. Summary: 1 Stars
this book was awful and what makes it worse is that after the gold coast you would expect it would be clever and entertaining. instead, its redundant and insipid. the same thing over and over and over. not to spoil it but i can spare you--the wife cheated on the husband. they get back together. reader is reminded she was unfaithful. they have trouble because wife was unfaithful. reader is reminded wife was unfaithful. they are really back together. trouble continues as a result of infidelity. wife is taken back by husband. trouble continues. reader is reminded of infidelity. more trouble...blah blah blah. they also have sex including details of how impressed husband is with himself. and in case reader forgets, there is a reference to wife's infidelity. really really lame.
