Lucy Muir was not unhappy in her marriage, but she was living the life of her husband and of her in-laws. Upon her husband's untimely death, Lucy comes to this realization, and decides it is time to start living her own life. She and her children move out to the sea and settle in a house that no one else will live in, because it is said to be inhabited by the ghost of a previous owner, Captain Gregg. Lucy is not afraid of the ghost when she encounters him, and the two of them develop a relationship. They are really quite compatible and quite good for each other in different ways. Captain Gregg is able to help Lucy assert her independence from her overbearing in-laws, and Lucy helps the Captain take care of some of his unfinished "earthly" business.
This book is absolutely charming and impossible to put down. It is a bit different from the film, but equally as good. It is beautifully written, with characters that almost leap off the page, they are so real. The quality of this edition is nice as well. The hardback book came with a really tight binding, and very nice pages and print.
"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" is a treasure, and a book that I will read again and again. I highly recommend this book!!!!
