Book Reviews of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir

Book Review: A Great Beach Read
Summary: 4 Stars

I took this book on a beach vacation and finished it in two days. It reads quickly, with some humor to make it a fun, lighthearted book. You cannot help but like the characters, and the setting. If you enjoyed the movie, the book is worth your time. (The movie follows the book very closely, with the exception that the Captain's voice is only in Mrs. Muir's mind, he is never visible to her in the book. In the movie, the Captain is very much visible to Mrs. Muir. This works well on the screen, but the book version of the Captain is just as effective).

Book Review: A Wonderful companion to the movie of 1947
Summary: 5 Stars

I love the book, although I must say that the movie is better. The book shows the development of the romance between Lucy and the Captain but you really see this in the movie. I didn't care for the development of the two children especially when Lucy visits with her son who is studying theology. Overall, I recommend the movie first and then the book.

Book Review: A hauntingly beautiful story
Summary: 5 Stars

This story never fails to transport me to another time & place. Begin reading and you'll practically feel the air turn salty and hear the gentle lapping of waves on the shore outside your window. I'm not big on romance stories, but I make an exception for the Ghost & Mrs. Muir. This edition - library bound - is really beautifully made, too. This book was a joy to read & re-read.

Book Review: Better than any film adaptation could ever be!
Summary: 5 Stars

Since the 1960s I have read The Ghost And Mrs. Muir well
over ten times and, having stumbled across the admiring reviews
herein, will start reading it again tomorrow. It is a wondrous
amalgam of fantasy and reality, of the yearning for romance and
the painful gaining of maturity. I am a fifty-five year old male
upset to usually find Leslie's novel categorized as "romance" fiction.
Her world followed Jane Austen's by over two hundred
years, but Leslie's novel has much of the wit and merit of Emma
or Pride and Prejudice.

Book Review: Different from the movie....
Summary: 3 Stars

I enjoyed reading this book, after being in love with the romantic version movie for as far back as I can remember. The movie definately took liberties in reworking the story, but it was interesting to read how it all was originally put down on paper. The only thing I think detracted from the story was the way they kept trying to analize everything. Outside of that, I thought it was a good ghost story
