Book Reviews of The GiftBook Review: A Book of LIGHT Summary: 5 Stars
Hafiz{Shams-ud-din Muhammed}lived in Persia in the 1300's. {Hafiz is an honorific given to one who memorized the Entire Qu`ran}That he is the greatest poet of Iran is unquestioned{many people there can recite great portions of his work from memory}That he is the greatest sufi poet of all is more of the question. In this volume, Danile Ladinsky's translations almost appear as collaborations.By rendering Hafiz into modern English, he has done us a great service. "Why just show you God's menu?/Hell,we are all starving/Let's eat." and this gem"I can see angels sitting on your ears/polishing trumpets, replacing lute stringsstretching new skins on the drums, and gathering wood for the evenings fire/they danced all night but you did not hear them/..."His poetyr is light ethereal, one moment, then earthy almost bawdy the next. Deeply, profoundly spiritual"Pray to be Humble,so that God does not have to appear to be so stingy/..." and this " Fear is the cheapest room in the house/ I would like to see you living in better conditions/..." Hafiz is to me unequalled. For lovers of poetry, seekers, lovers, friends,Hafiz is a wonderful guide and companion. There are those in touch with the Divine, whose works give forth light, and touch all who come in contact. Hafiz is one such, and this collection is a lifelong companion.
Book Review: A Gift for the spirit Summary: 5 Stars
Its said of Haifz, and esp. the "Gift" that if you would randomly open a page therein lies the answer to your question\thought for the day.. whatever you may choose to call it. I bought this book as a Gift for a friend and kept it as a Gift for myself.. have given it as a Gift many times since, and everytime you open the pages something new and wonderful happens.
Dunno about the transalations and their accuracy - but really its such a phenomenal book, who cares.. the spirit soars and in the end (or the begining) i think that is what Hafiz would have had.
Get it.
Book Review: A Gift indeed! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently saw the amazing modern poet Saul Williams in an informal reading, and he recommended Hafiz highly. So when I was searching for a birthday "Gift" for the girl I saw the show with, I decided to look into Hafiz. You can open this book to any page and find a poem of such sumptuous beauty, transcendental wisdom, and poetic mastery that your soul will feel lighter after reading. I bought one copy for her, another copy for me, and then the next day I bought another one for another dear friend's birthday. I am convinced that Hafiz is an angel sent here to show us how to commune with the divine. You will treasure this book!
Book Review: A Joke? Summary: 1 Stars
This book must be a joke as no one except an opportunist of the worst variety would dare to claim that their poetry is an authentic translation of the work of one of the worlds great poets. The author claims to be a translator - I suppose in the vein of Coleman Barks who also has no knowledge of Arabic languages - at least Bark's poetry is readable, this book is not.
Save your money.
Book Review: A Persian's view: Summary: 1 Stars
Don't worry if thesepuffy confections taste saltier than you might expect. Their sole link to Hafez is through the run of his tears and a friend's betrayal.
