Book Reviews of The GiftBook Review: Hafiz Summary: 4 Stars
Such a lovely book, i had to buy it because of a class, and i find myself reading the poems everyday, not just during my class. The book was in good conditions, and it was interesting when i got it because there was an Ace of Diamonds card inside the book. Just awsome.
Book Review: Hafiz - the Irreverent Mystic Summary: 5 Stars
Hafiz is a gift to all those with the uncommon sensitivity to realize the universality of the spiritual experience. The book is a delightful example of mystic poetry that is not bound by the silly confines of religion or belief. Hafiz writes with a rare feeling of oneness with the universe that is the apotheosis of mysticism.
I remember reading this book and breaking into nervous laughter at the sheer delight with which these poems were written. No wonder the poems were not published in his lifetime - he would surely have been beheaded for blasphemy!
This book is as much for the budding poet as it is for the poet; as much for the unitiated as for the seeker; as much for the classicist as for the modern, and, finally, as much for the sampler as for the connoisseur. It is not a book that should be read cover to cover... savor it the way you savor the moment a red flag that tears off from its pole and now follows the impulse of the wind... read these poems, laugh, meditate... but don't say it is just a 'nice' book! It's not. It is a mystic's world in word.
Enjoy!
Book Review: Hafiz makes God smile ! ! ! Summary: 5 Stars
I can think of nothing more delightful than reading this book of poetry. Daniel Ladinsky is a perfect translator. If you enjoy spontaneous smiling and endless wonderment then this book is for you. It is by far one of the greatest books I own.
Book Review: Hafiz vs. Daniel Ladinsky Summary: 1 Stars
If you want to read the poetry of Daniel Ladinsky, buy The Gift. A lot of people seem to like Ladinsky's poetry. Just don't make the mistake of thinking that these are translations of poetry by Hafiz. They're not. They're all-new, all-original English language poems by Ladinsky. I don't know why he publishes his own work under the name of Hafiz.
If you want to read the poetry of Hafiz in English translation, consider Hafiz of Shiraz by Peter Avery.
Book Review: Hafiz' "The Gift" Summary: 5 Stars
This collection of poems is perhaps the best of Hafiz, and what makes them really come alive is the brilliant, creative translation by Daniel Ladinsky. He uses modern language -- and it works to almost magical effect. There's also a lot of humor in these poems, mixed in with the spiritual insight. This book is a keeper!
