Book Review: A beautiful, yet haunting tale
Summary: 4 Stars
I was curious to read this novel after enjoying Maia, and Watership Down. Richard Adams shows his versatility of subject matter in this book, especially the research that he had to put into the antique porcelin collectors market. The book reads almost like poetry; indeed, there is much quoted within these pages. I found myself knowing that there was something strange going on in the story, just below the surface. I thoroughly enjoyed the first 4/5ths of the novel, marveling in Mr. Adams word usage. He paints an incredible picture of the central characters and their relationships. But I kept waiting for the "horror" to show up, since that was what was printed on the book's cover. I was not satisfied with the ending. I felt like everybody else knew what had happened while I didn't. Sort of like Sherlock Holmes gathering everybody in the drawing room to explain the murder, yet only saying, "You all know what happened here, so I won't explain it." I didn't see the "evil" but just the sadness of it all. Overall, a good story, especially if you like to form your own ending.
