Book Reviews of The Giver

Book Review: "Utopia"
Summary: 5 Stars

In Lowry's book you are transported to a place devoid of emotion; a place where there are no past mistakes to look back and learn from. That is unless you are "The Reciever of Memory." In the socieyt where our main character, Jonas, lives there is only one person who carries all of the memories for the entire society. This method is used to shelter the society from uneccessary problems such as bad weather, love, and pain. The idea works except one person must hold the burden for everyone.

In her book Lowry's provides detailed descriptions of such complicated emotions as anger, grief, and true happiness so that you can experience them yourself. The book is not purely for entertainment value, it definitely will evoke some serious thinking. By the end of this novel it is guaranteed you will feel everything Jonas has been through.

Book Review: #1
Summary: 5 Stars

As soon as I picked up this book I was captivated by it. The people are all so ignorant ... the old saying ignorance is bliss Is best put here. Although there are some parts of the book that made me cry, don't ask me why but when I found out who got released I kind of knew it by the way he talked about her. Overall A great read and a captivating one at that.

Book Review: 'The Giver' Inappropriate for less than 8th grade
Summary: 1 Stars

When Jonas at age 12 receives the assignment of 'Receiver of memories' he learns more about his society of sameness than he cares to. As a Teacher I found this book troubling that schools would sanction the reading of 'The Giver' for anything less than 8th grade. The book talks about 'releasing' people and if you have the misfortune of reading it, as you can guess, it equates to euthanasia. I read it before my son's 6th grade class completed the book due to a newspaper article I had read 3 years ago.
My son has had nightmares ever since. He does not understand why someone would write a book like this. Although there are some redeeming qualities about 'sameness' this is a book I would not recommend in any capacity.

Book Review: * * Giver * *
Summary: 2 Stars

I must say this book is creative and its not like any book I've ever read. New and fresh, but it didn't interest me much. At the beinging I found it weird and had a stupid story line. At no point in the book was I excited to know what happened next, and it was definitely not a page turner, it didn't interest me.

Book Review: *My* Giver Review!
Summary: 4 Stars

I would tell people about this story b/c its a good boo it shows what the world could be if we had sameness. But I think most people I told them about it they wouldnt really like it b/c of the release part b/c everyone would just want to die of old age.But some I think some really wouldnt understand b/c they don't have kids. But if they did I think they would dislike the book.So I would tell them about the book. But to certain people NOT all people i know b/c they wouldnt enjoy it but yet agan some people would enjoy it but at the same time dislike it at times!.
