Book Reviews of The Glass Castle: A MemoirBook Review: Bravo! Summary: 5 StarsA beautifully written profile of one dysfunctional family. As painful as this type of topic can be, I could not put this book down. I admire Ms. Wall for sharing her story. Many Thanks.
Book Review: Spirited and courageous Summary: 5 Stars
Jeanette was spirited and feisty. In spite of the deplorable living circumstances this person was able to persevere and find adventure along with the courage and determination to move beyond. I laughed out loud and felt deep sadness for her and her siblings. Jeanette's writing was so descriptive I felt I could visualize the places they lived and the children she played and fought with. This truly is a life of courage, acceptance, tolerance, hope and love.
Book Review: Jeannette Walls has written a classic! Summary: 5 StarsThis is a slice of Americana and in my opinion is right up there with many of the classics I've read. Jeannette Walls can write like no one else with clarity, unyielding honesty and courage. Her life has been a challenge beyond belief, but she has emerged the victor for it. I so admire how she faced her worst fears and walked right through them with such grace. Her parents were and are extremely intelligent (as is she) and because of this, not inspite of it, they could not conform to our basic societal rules...they had to be free in thought and spirit, but their children paid an immense price for this. Thus said, Miss Walls described them with empathy and such loving kindness, not bitterness. She's great and I hope she writes a sequel!
Book Review: Surprisingly... NOT Depressing! Summary: 5 StarsWhat a painful, yet fantastic story. I heard an interview with Jeannette Wells on NPR and was intrigued by her story. After reading "Angela's Ashes", the last thing I wanted for a light summer read was another depressing childhood tale. Jeannette's recounting of her childhood makes for a very entertaining page turner, despite how trying those years must have been.
Highly recommended!
Book Review: Chicago reader Summary: 3 StarsThis is "Angela's Ashes" USA/ Hillbilly style, sans dead babies, but with starvation and trash picking, drunk dad, aloof mother, teasing classmates, horrific grandparents. Throw in pedophilia and incest for a new twist.
Way too long. The last 30 pages are the only relief, after 350 pp of torture. I LOVED Angela's Ashes, but this book falls far short of the humor, pain, and joy conveyed by McCourt there. It lacks the love and forgiveness.
It goes on and on, without the occasional comic relief in McCourt's book. An interesting but almost trite picture of alcoholism and codependence.
I am happy that 3 of the 4 children appear to have survived, but it was so hard to finish.... Chicago reader.
