Book Reviews of The Godfather

Book Review: Good to Read It Again
Summary: 5 Stars

Read this years ago and I wanted to read it again and have it for my library. Just as great as I remembered.

Book Review: Intimate lives of an American crime family
Summary: 4 Stars

Having already seen the movie, I hadn't ever thought of reading the book until my father recommended it to me. And since he rarely reads fictional novels I decided to read Mario Puzo's book. Very quickly I noticed that the book includes elements from both Godfather I and II movies, e.g. the story of how ordinary Vito Corleone became a top mafia boss, the horse's head, etc.

What I like about the book: The main characters (the Don, Michael, Sonny, Tom Hagen, the other mobsters) and their personal histories, the action, and the detailed descriptions of how they arrange security as part of their everyday lives. The way these people live is really fascinating.

What I dislike about the book: The numerous side stories re: minor characters, e.g. the undertaker, the doctor, Corleone's daughter in Vegas, Fontane's family life, etc., that have little to do with the core storyline. I wish Puzo had concentrated more on the principal story. I didn't start reading the Godfather to learn the details of their rather mundane lives.

All in all, a good - but not a great book - at least in my opinion. A factual history of the real Sicilian mafia can be found in Cosa Nostra by John Dickie.

The Godfather

It is the GodFather of All Novels......

Book Review: Jeffy G
Summary: 5 Stars

I thought the book the book was great! It was a lot more descriptive than the movie. I liked how Mario Puzo was descriptive about his characters and what was going on in the environment. He gave his characters feelings and emotions. The book was written well and had a great storyline. A crime family rising to power in NYC in the 40s and 50s makes for a very exciting story. I would recommend this book to anyone who like a good crime story or is interested in the mafia.

Book Review: Just too good
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is one of the finest I have read. If I could give it 10 stars, I would without hesitation. It's a wonderful book.
