Book Reviews of The Godfather

Book Review: Must Read
Summary: 5 Stars

Was curious by the reviews "Not as good as Movie". This intrigued me since one usually hears the opposite. I have the feeling these reviews were by people that do not read. They decided to read the book only because they enjoyed the movie.

Personally, I felt like I was watching the movie as I read. The movie was excellently done because the story is so well written. Any fan of the movie should appreciate the extra detail on characters left out in the movies. Some small characters in the movie (at least small screen time) are revealed to be much more important with the extra detail in the book.

I can now re-watch the movie with a different perspective and appreciate it even more so.

Book Review: My favorite book, even the second time around
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this book even though I read it a few years ago and just finished it for the second time.
It is exellent. Deep, clever, with plenty of lingo and inside info on the worlds of Mafia, hollywood and Las Vegas.
Great for anyone who liked either the movie or anything else by Mario Puzo.
A must, in my book, for anybody who likes reading.

Book Review: New fan for an old classic
Summary: 4 Stars

I found a copy in an old box of books in the garage. I had seen the movies prior to reading the book and was in the mood for reading a "classic." In spite of the fact that I was already aware of the plot twists to come, I really enjoyed the read. At times, I found myself daydreaming or bogged down with the book's small details. But overall, I enjoyed the excellent character development. The book offers more insight into the Godfather, how he came to be, and into his crime family. By the end, I felt like I knew the "Godfather" and his family. It was an interesting, although sometimes arduous read.

Book Review: Not as good as the movie
Summary: 3 Stars

In most cases a book is better than a movie based on it- but the there are exceptions, and the 'Godfather' is one of them. In this case it is not that the book is bad- it is actually quite enjoyable- but 'The Godfather' is simply one of the greatest movies ever made.
The movie is very true to the plot of the book, but I was also struck by how much dialogue in the movie is straight out of the book. That is the real strength of the book: the dialogue. The other facets of Puzo's writing are not as strong. The story loses focus and momentum with the Johnny Fontane subplot, but overall is a good read.

Book Review: OK, but it's not as good as I remember it.
Summary: 3 Stars

I read "The Godfather" eagerly back in 1971 as an 18
year old, an 18 year old who didn't know as much as I
know now, either about life or literature. I think Mr. Puzo
has a good book here. Not a masterpiece, though I
don't know exactly how it could have been written better.
It just seems to me a little more overdramatic and
unreal than it did back when I first read it. 'Over the
top' might be the best way to describe it. I could not do it
as well, not even close, either writing it or imagining,
but I can't give it more than 3 stars.
