This was the first DeMille book I've read. The book had me laughing unexpectedly more than any others I've read, and that includes Carl Hiaasen.I kept telling myself that nothing really happens in the book but the first person narrative mixes sarcasm with wit to produce a sufficiently amusing and consistent humour that kept the tears rolling to the last page.
A rather slow story unfolds and before you know it, you're awaiting the results of many well-laid sub-plots. Each of the main characters, especially the mafia Don, have character flaws that are hilariously and sometimes savagely exploited by the witty tongue of the main character.
I insisted my father should take the book on holiday with him. My mother still hasn't forgiven me.
