Book Reviews of The Gonzo Way: A Celebration of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

Book Review: "One man's normal is another man's strange"
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm 35...and have been reading Hunter for what feels like a lot longer than that. At first, it was the wildness of his story telling...the madness that seemed to jump out, grab me and yank me back into each page. What a thrill. It was liberating, exhausting and needless to say, inspiring. After reading all that I could get my eyes on, the madness of the of the writing gave way to the wisdom; I was learning more than just getting the cheap thrill off of someone else's acid trips and mad games of truth or dare. I tried to explain to others what it was that I was learning, why I admired this (as they saw it) "madman". Deaf ears. Sadly...if it isn't surface level these days, it isn't worth the effort. So I just decided to keep it to myself. But now Anita set the record straight with The Gonzo Way. It is a perfect tribute. The honesty conveyed about the Man, and not just the Madness, made me proud to be part of it as an believer, fan and follower of the Good Doctor.

This is real deal. These Lessons are not just some random list cobbled together to give structure to a life past...it's a complete message that the Doc was letting us learn as we (those of who to chose do so) read between his lines. Do I love the madness...yes. Of course we can't live like Hunter ("never try and be like anybody else"), but he lets us play along at home through his words. I think he lived the American Dream...he was true Pioneer. That is what this country was built on, right? Pioneering. Hunter blazed trails (and a few spliffs, too). Heh heh.

I miss Hunter, but I can always tear into the middle of Hell's Angels or whip through 40-50 pages of Kingdom of Fear and there he is...poking his head out from over the "edge" at me with a high-pitched shriek, knowing grin and all while holding in his hand a tall cool Cubre Libre with plenty of ice.

Hunter once said, "The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over". Send word, brother. Send word.

Thanks for the book, Anita.
