The above is just one of many acidic observations Michael Gruber makes in this brilliant and timely novel. In this case he's referring to the woman-hating, boy-buggering tribal Pashtuns. He doesn't spare his own countrymen either, skewering our outwardly religious, materialistic culture. After reading this novel, one cames away with the impression that it would be hard to find a society more alien to Americans than that of the Pashtuns. Naturally this idea bodes ill for our involvement in Afghanistan. The novel also exposes the emptiness and contradiction at the heart of the jihadists' brand of Islam.
Gruber does an outstanding job with the characters' voices- the things each character says seem very plausible. At one point it works against the story; when the group of intellectuals are sitting around discussing Jungian psychology, it really is very boring, just as most of us would expect it to be. I'm holding back a star because much of the action taking place at NSA doesn't ring true. I know the government types have to be ambitious and gullible for a central plot device to work. but it just seemed a little too pat.
