Book Reviews of The Goose Girl (Books of Bayern)Book Review: A Good Fantasy Summary: 3 Stars
This wasn't my favorite book, but it wasn't bad. Shannon Hale isn't a bad writer. I don't mean that at all. Some of the writing in this book was beautiful. However, in my opinion, it dragged on far too long. There were several places in the story where it could have been resolved, but that was not so. Some of the descriptions in this book were absolutely unnecessary. However, it is a good book, and I would overall recommend it.
Book Review: A Lovely Princess Tale Summary: 4 Stars
"The Goose Girl" may be looked at as two things. It is a tale about a princess, a retelling of an old Grimm tale (one that I have not yet encountered). It is also a sort of fantasy book including speech with animals and magic control.
And yet, "The Goose Girl" does not fall into the common, stereotypical traps set by these genres/types. It is a book that is remarkably enough not stale, with twists, excitements, and constant changes. It may be the simple story of a princess going through hardships to achieve her goal, but it has so much more than that. It has side characters that spice up the story, plot turns that make things different, and a comfortable pace. The magic and fantasy of the story do not control it, which means that lovers of reality will still be pleased by this story.
It's a well-written book with an interesting plotline and some very fun characters. But it has its flaws as well. "The Goose Girl" is an almost 400-paged book, and it certainly feels it at times. While there is an unobstructed flow, there are many points in the book where it grows tedious and begins to drag. This book could do with a good edit.
If you don't mind that it drags on a bit, it's really a great book. You don't have to love princesses or fantasy to enjoy this book. It's not that kind of a book. It's eloquent, enjoyable, and for any reader who can handle a bit of bulk. Enjoy.

Book Review: A Magical Fairy Tale Summary: 4 Stars
The Goose Girl was an amazing story. I love Shannon Hale's take on this fairy tale. It was definitely original and creative. The world of Bayern that she created was fantastic with its mythical feel. I definitely would not mind living in that world! I also enjoyed that a map was included in the beginning of the book, so the reader can follow Ani's journey.
When it came to the plot, I found it to be predictable. I knew pretty much exactly what was going to happen before it did. Nevertheless, this did not bother me. I still really enjoyed reading this book. There was one part that had me on the verge of tears because it was so sad, but everything works out in the end.
The Goose Girl is full of adventure and suspense. It was definitely a fun read that sucked me right in. It kind of reminded me of Graceling by Kristin Cashore in some ways especially the parts where Ani was in the forest. It is a the first book in Shannon Hale's The Books of Bayern Series, so I am looking forward to reading the rest of her books.
