Book Reviews of The Goose Girl (Books of Bayern)

Book Review: Beautifully written, original, imaginative, utterly magical and real!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just discovered Shannon Hale's "The Goose Girl" and am amazed. Her story, based on the fairy tale, is both magical and real, with characters who seem so alive they breathe right out of the pages. "The Goose Girl" is a book you can read for the joy of the story, and for the amazing things Hale does with it. She takes the elements of Grimms' fairy tale and weaves something entirely new.

But there is more than just the tale. Hale is a truly gifted writer! I hung on every word, reading for the sheer wonder and substance of her writing. Shannon Hale's is a true story-teller. Her imagery is beautiful and original, and yet her writing has a simplicity and innocence that brought back my childhood. She can write of the good (and bad) in human nature and bring you out feeling like words were just created, and you just spoke your first.

If you can get a hardcover, DO. This is a book you'll want to read over and over just to "live" it. When you step into the covers of the book, into the kingdoms of Kildenree and Bayern, you are there. When you begin the journey, there's no turning back. I couldn't, and didn't, put the book down.

Book Review: Brilliant:D
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the best stories I've read since Ella Enchanted. A princess story based on a fairy tale, but is stunning original. Love the idea that she can talk to the wind.. not like a Storm in X-men sort of thing, but more the idea of nature being alinve and communicable. The main characters are very lovable.. The book is truly magical:D If you are going to spend money on books, then but this one, its worth its wieght in gold:D

Book Review: CAUTION!
Summary: 1 Stars

While this book is captivating, it is VERY mature. If you do not want your daughter reading about women baring their breasts so their enemies can raise their bastard children and other equally disturbing sexual innuendo (which this book is chock full of) please read it yourself first and decide if it is appropriate for your daughter. I found it to be appropriate for high school but no younger and absolutely not sixth grade. Please do not put this series in the same category as Hale's book, "Princess Academy".

Book Review: Charming fairytale retelling
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is a charming fairytale retelling. It is a sweet read for any age, but especially for young ladies.

Summary: 5 Stars

Goose Girl by Shannon Hale is a delightful book that should get the approval even of readers who don't much care for fantasy. The concept of taking a known story like the fairy tale this is based on and creating a whole story-behind-the-story is very well done here.

Here are some of the discussion questions my mother-daughter book club touched on when we read it:
* How did Ani find the confidence to be the person she was supposed to be?
* Could she ever be a ruler like her mother?
* When did you start to think that Geric may not be a guard at the palace?
* How did Ani/Isi's experience being a goose girl help her become more confident?
* If you had written this book, what would you have changed about any part of the plot?

It's fun to read the Goose Girl then go right into the sequels, Enna Burning an River Secrets. It's interesting reading the series, because one book doesn't pick up where the one before left off. Instead they each build a new story based on a different main character, someone who may have been fairly minor in a different book.
