Book Reviews of The Goose Girl (Books of Bayern)

Book Review: Excellent read for all!
Summary: 5 Stars

This was the first book I read by Shannon Hale and since then I have recommended it to anyone looking for an enjoyable read. This is excellent for young and old, male and female. It is hard to find acceptable reading material for youth and this is outstanding!

Book Review: Fairy Tale Retold
Summary: 5 Stars

The Goose Girl is the story of Ani, Crown Princess of Kildenree. Ani is betrothed to the Crown Prince of Bayern, which is a month's journey away. On the way to Bayern, some things happen that will change Ani's life forever. I don't want to go into more detail for fear of ruining the story for people that want to read it.

I do enjoy a good fantasy story now and then and this was a great one. The author does a wonderful job of pulling you into the story and making you want to keep reading way into the wee hours. I loved the characters and I was excited to discover that this is a series. I've also heard this is based on a story by the Grimm Brothers, but I've never read it. This book makes me want to seek out the original and read it. I'm also putting the second book on my wish list.

Book Review: Fantastic
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a long ride to work (an hour each way) and have started reading books on tape. The adult section got boring, so I started looking in the kids section. I stumbled across this story and fell in love with it. I agree with a previous reviewer that it's probably best for 8 and up...the horse's death was pretty harsh. It is based on Grimm after all.
Overall, great characters and story, I highly recommend it. I'm definately looking for her other books now : )

Book Review: Fantasy/Fairy Tale Adventure
Summary: 4 Stars

The Goose Girl, written by Shannon Hale, is a retelling of a Grimms fairy tale. Sixteen year old Crown Princess Anidori of Kildenree, who can speak to animals and can hear wind, is engaged to marry a prince in the distant kingdom of Bayern. However, Selia, her lady-in-waiting, uses deceit to make herself into the Crown Princess. Anidori becomes the goose girl.

This novel has lush imagery when describing scenes of nature. There is much suspense and unexpected twists in the plot. There is something for everybody in this novel- romance, drama, comedy, and more. Also, this book is more realistic than most fairy tales, such as how the characters are complex.

This book does have its negative points, however. The book starts off slow, starting off with tales of Ani's childhood. The ending feels adrupt and leaves the reader hanging. I feel that some interesting characters should have been given more attention.

In the end, this novel is an excellent read for anyone wanting to read a fantasy/fairy tale novel in a medeival setting.

Book Review: Fascinating, Riveting, but Heavy Violence
Summary: 4 Stars

The story is fantastic, with interesting characters, stunning description, and a plot that keeps the pages turning. But please be aware that there are some scenes that are very descriptive of violence and gore as well as a tale told within the story that hints at nudity. After reading that the next story in this series is also heavy on the violence, I'll skip it.
