Book Review: A LOT of work!

I bought this book thinking it would help make my life easier as the busy mother of five children, the youngest of whom are twin toddlers. I steered away from other slow-cooker recipe books that have you dump all the ingredients together along with a can of condensed soup. I have healthier aspirations for my family than that. I also wanted some interesting variety in the dishes we eat from night to night. While the recipes in this book are nutritious and offer variety, they require a LOT of work. The black bean-chicken chili requires roasting poblanos, onions, and garlic under the broiler before peeling, chopping, and adding to the slow cooker. The same recipe had me grinding my own cumin seed. Perhaps some cooks would prefer such methods, but for me, it was way too time-consuming.
Aside from being labor-intensive, we just did not like some of the dishes. The bratwurst with red cabbage and apples had a distinctly traditional German taste with its blend of seasonings--an ethnic, though not very family-friendly, experience. I will not make that one again! I find brats to be much better on the grill, not boiled to death for hours. If anyone out there knows of a cookbook that has easier, less time-consuming, family-friendly, AND healthy recipes, I'd love to know about it.
