Book Review: First series 5 stars, second series 3

I first encountered Amber 7 years ago; only now have I actually managed to get all the books together to read. The first series is superb. Zelazny weaves a great plot with lots of twists and turns and some good characters to boot. Corwin is a truly interesting protagonist. It definitely makes a change to have a fantasy hero that is not a paragon of virtue. He does some truly evil things over the course of the series.The second series is weaker in a number of ways. Firstly, the protagonist, Merlin, seems much more cliched than Corwin. The plot has less of the plotting and backbiting between the Amberites than in the original, which is always distressing to a scheming individual such as myself. My major gripe, however, is that with features such as the Ghostwheel and the Keep of Four Worlds Zelazny disrupts the purity of his original universe, where Order and Chaos were the only powers that matter.
