Book Review: Pungent tale from below ground in Victorian London

This is a terrific historical thriller - the sights, sounds and smells of Victorian London are vividly drawn, showing evidence of superb research and - more tellingly - a natural flair for storytelling. Clare Clark easily matches Peter Ackroyd's power of description, and delivers a top-notch story to go with it. The plot is gripping, the characters come impressively to life, and even the fascinating Victorian engineer Joseph Bazalgette makes an appearance - the reader gets to share the exhilaration of seeing the modern world take shape and emerge from the shadows of the nineteenth century, through the eyes of contemporary Londoners. It is carried off with great conviction. Most of all, it is the atmosphere that lingers on in the mind long after the last page has been turned. This book will never let you visit London again without wondering what is going on just beneath your feet...Sheer quality entertainment. Let's hope Clare Clark has more novels up her sleeve like this one.
