Book Review: Myth or reality?
Summary: 4 Stars
The Alexander Romance is a book dismissed by many scholars as a simple fairy-tale becauses its roots come from a long oral tradition with no original sources that can stand up and shout their name. Of course the story of Alexander with his heroic acts and shakespearan plots and psychosis is such a good story its been told and told again for more than 2000 years. This book is a written legacy of those orale traditions and the origins of this book trace back to the 4th century. Much of the book is fairy tale with fantastic tales however as a historian I can't help but feel that hidden in their is some real nuggets of truth the hard part is to know which fact is the pearl of wisdom. I'd personally opt for the description of the way he looked - or maybe thats just being a romantic. I really enjoyed the discussions with philopshers in india or his letter to the amazons its so more human than our modern obsession with creating an Alexander depraved and corrupt with power.In any respect whether historical truth or myth its valid as a piece of historical evidence as to how succeeding generations viewed the story of Alexander and its certainly a more enjoyable read than some of the other original sources. Whatever it is an essential read for Alexander students.
