Book Reviews of The Halloween ManBook Review: Wonderful, thrilling, fascinating! Summary: 5 Stars
The Halloween Man is a real experience as a horror novel. I was constantly surprised and enthralled by the storytelling, and the stories within the main story. From the kidnapping at the opening, to the way it opens up into the New England village and all its secrets, and the rich Crown family with their opulent decadance. This one had me going. When the mystery of the village is revealed, and the true story of Stony and Lourdes comes through, I could not stop turning the pages. What probably got to me the most was how the story of the Halloween Man is a horror novel about grace and redemption in the face of absolute terror. I don't see htis that often in horror fiction. I am all ready to go get Clegg's You Come When I Call You next. No wonder he won a Bram Stoker award.
Book Review: entertaining yet frustrating Summary: 3 Stars
I found this to be an entertaining yet frustrating read. I believe it took the author too long to make his point, he built the suspense up and kept me dangling until I didn't care who the Halloween man was or what happens to him. I found a few of the characters one dimensional, Mr. Fairclough and Van Crawford were cookie-cutter villians; however, I do believe Stony and Nora had some depth. I also found the ending to be incongruent with the rest of the book because it took a long time for the story to progress and then...bam!...we have the climax and the conclusion in a very short time. Nonetheless, I would still describe my reading of this book as enjoyable.
Book Review: oh man! Summary: 1 Stars
i find the case with clegg strange. he's like a guy who voluntarily turn to cliches and all the bad stuff a horror writer can. too many characters making it seem like total chaos at times, when he finds that the suspence is too slow he just writes a scene of violence having little to do with the plot, stupid dialogues, cliche "evil man"- talk, not enough focus on building up the plot, too many irrelevant episodes described, too many passages of short length, idiotic "i must kill"-cliche thoughts and similiar cliches. the guy represent why horror is considered junk by many.
Book Review: really 3 1/2 Summary: 3 Stars
I did enjoy this book, but you can actually go thorough and pick out which books he drew inspiration from. The opening is quite similar to ghost story. Stony's childhood and adulthood reminded me very much of Mr. X. The character of Nora seemed very similar to Mother Abigal from the Stand. Also Nora makes reference to the demon Legion, of which Stephen King is constantly making reference to. Clegg is a talented writer, but I believe this book is bogged down with envy of other writers in this genre. This is my first Clegg book, and I will be reading more of him in the future.
Book Review: this is the best horror novel I have ever read Summary: 5 Stars
I am a big Stephen King fan and I can recomend his new one, *Bag of Bones*, but then I bought this one at the same time. This is the best horror story I have ever read. My only problem with it was it went too fast and before I knew it I had already finished reading it. Gave me a lot of real goosebumps and surprises, which does not happen alot to me when I read horror fiction.*The Hallowe'en Man* is worth it. I'm careful about how I spend money in horror fiction because there is so much bad stuff out there. This book is not part of the bad at all. I have to recommend it for anyone who thinks horror fiction means bad writing so they could see that there is great writing in horror.
