Book Reviews of The Halloween Tree

Book Review: Superb! A masterpiece of young adult literature.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've known this book forwards and backwards since I was twelve, and I use this book in my literature classes around the month of October to spark the interest of my students. For those of you who know Bradbury's work, you will be amply satisfied with his brilliant storytelling and narrative about a group of young friends in search of true meaning of Halloween. This book never fails to amaze, and the look of astonishment on the faces of my students when they read the book is priceless. My caveat is this; the reading level of this book may be listed at 9-12, but the comprehension level is more middle-school to high school; however, I highly recommend this book to all ages. I have enjoyed this book for years, and I still enjoy it to this day.

THE HALLOWEEN TREE
BOOK REVIEW

..."A Pumpkin tree," cried out a voice
"No" exclaimed Tom.
The wind blew among the high branches
and tossed their bright burdens, softly.
"A halloween tree" said Tom.
...And he was right.

The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury is a science fiction classic. The fantastic tale takes you on a wonderful and exciting journey through strange and distant lands on an epic search for a frightened and baffled young boy.
Leading the expedition is a mystical character who goes by the name of Mr. Moundshround. His enchanting and mysterious personality is lifted off the pages by Ray Bradbury's poetic and inventive writing style that keeps you wanting more. The book is full of many emotions and feelings that let the characters come alive and make you feel as though a new world has just opened up to you.
The book is filled with frightening passages, powerful illustrations, and breath taking imagery. The Halloween Tree is a must read science fiction book, that most definitely is for everyone.

Book Review: The cover is really the best thing about the book
Summary: 2 Stars

A cute kid's book and brief history of Halloween around the world(though I do wonder about the historical accuracy hmmm...). It was also weird that this was a male-only space the whole time. Easy to read and I'm sure any kid who loves Halloween would love this book. It just did nothing for me as an adult.

Book Review: The is no one better than Brabbury at evoking bizarre and detailed imagery
Summary: 5 Stars

When it comes to using words to evoke bizarre and stimulating imagery, there is no one better than Ray Bradbury. This book is an adventure conducted by young male trick-or-treaters on a spooky Halloween night. They walk up to the door of the local haunted house and somehow one of them, a boy named Pip, is whisked away to a bizarre place. The mysterious Carapace Clavicle Moundshroud agrees to help the boys rescue Pip and they too are taken off on a journey through space and time.
During their travels, they are taken back to the days when the Egyptians mummified their dead, which is the first step in providing some historical background to the creatures commonly seen on Halloween night. All through the journeys, they come close to Pip, but whatever force that is controlling him always manages to take him out of their grasp at the last moment. At the end, all the boys are returned to their starting point and their most exciting Halloween ever is at an end.
Bradbury describes all this in his own unique and expressive style. For example, when the boys are in medieval Europe, there is the following paragraph:

"Which is to say that all the old beasts, all the old tales, all the old nightmares, all the old unused demons-put-by, and witches left in the lurch, quaked at the call, reared at the whistle, trembled at the summons, and in dustdevils of propulsion skimmed down the roads, flitted skies, buckshot through shaken trees, forded streams, swam rivers, pierced clouds, and arrived, arrived, arrived."

This is one of the best horror stories ever written for children. Furthermore, it also teaches them a bit of the folklore of Western civilization.

Book Review: Trick or Treat?
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great book to read at Halloween time, for young and old alike. It captures the feeling of being a kid in a small town on Halloween and going trick or treating. Of course, the trick and the treat is that we are taken back through time to see how Halloween began: from ancient Egypt, through the Celtic Samhain, up to Bradbury's day. For anyone to whom Halloween is a special time of year, this is a book to read.
