Book Reviews of The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star

Book Review: AWESOME!!! DUH...it's NIKKI SIXX
Summary: 5 Stars

I love Nikki Sixx and this book is a look into a side of his life many people may not know. He was one of few who have physically died from an overdose and been brought back (add Phil Anselmo-Pantera) to the list. Point being, this isn't something he thought of years after coming clean. These are excerpts from his personal diary that were locked in storage units until he discovered them. The way it's written and the songs on the Heroin Diaries soundtrack by his band Sixx: A.M. will take you through how Nikki Sixx felt. I'm so blown away by both...

Book Review: The Best Book & Album of 2007 PERIOD!
Summary: 5 Stars

First off, other than their 1st 2 albums, "Too Fat for Love" & "Shout at the Devil" (which were great),I was never a huge Crue fan. Their albums that followed were nothing but watered down, glam metal. I am a musician and self proclaimed music buff, so before I left to Cancun for a vacation, I thought I better buy some reading material. Well all I can say is I am glad I did! I couldn't put this book down! Nikki tells his story in a way that makes you feel like it is 1987 once again and you our a fly in his "heroine homes" wall. It is truly amazing why the hell this dude is still breathing! But I have to tell you, the biggest suprise by far is the CD. It is hands down one of the best albums I have heard in years. Once you read the book then listen to the CD, it paints such a clear picure of Nikki's nighmare. It's production is unbelievable and the songs are great. James Michael, who is an award winning produce handles the singing for SIXX:AM. He is an unbelievable vocalist and talent. Also DJ Ashba who also helped with the arranging and writting is superb. Drums were programed, but they sound live on the CD, which is a huge feet in itself. Anyway, if you like rock music and a great story, this Is the package to get.

Book Review: How can anyone not like this book?
Summary: 5 Stars

I just finished the Heroin Diaries. I have been a Motley Crue fan(particularly Nikki Sixx fan) for over 20 years. I thought the book would be good, but I didn't think it would be as great as it was.

It is really disturbing at times and difficult to read just because his addiction was so scary and lonely and dark. It's very strange to remember being at those concerts and knowing that Motley Crue was wild and crazy, but having know idea what was really going on. It almost makes you feel guilty for not knowing what was going on!

I think the book was fantastic. I finished it really quickly. I cannot imagine that anyone could not love this book and admire Nikki Sixx for sharing the diaries. I wouldn't have let anyone read the diaries and I think it took a lot of guts.

Nice job Nikki!

Book Review: Riveting, raw and brutally honest
Summary: 5 Stars

Riveting, raw and brutally honest. There is NOTHING in this book that glamorizes drug addiction. I disagree with the reviewer who stated of the book that "it is simply a self-loathing pity party." I believe that Mr. Sixx' point was to demonstrate, in a quite uncensored manner, how pitiful and self destructive his lifestyle was, LOOKING AT IT FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE SOBRIETY HE NOW HAS. One prominent feature of addicts is DENIAL. This book stands as a testament to Mr. Sixx' having addressed his problems and relinquishing his denial about his self destructive behavior. The story also provides HOPE to others that no matter how low you've gone, there is the opportunity to change your life. As far as the idea of this book being "a how to manual" for a future addict, I can't imagine anyone in his/her right mind wanting to pursue these kinds of behaviors after reading this book. Quite the contrary, I'd bet they'd be thinking twice after reading the grotesque details of substance abuse. Mr. Sixx is to be commended both regarding his sobriety and his willingness to air his dirty laundry to the world in the hopes of diverting others from the path he took. It would also be a great addition to the material presented to hear more about his experiences of achieving and maintaining sobriety.

Book Review: Drugs are not cool
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a Crue fan in the 80s - like everyone in the 80s. Even better, I was a Nikki Sixx fan. I was young and fairly naive, and while I knew that sex and drugs ruled rock n' roll, the extent of the abuse and horror of it all never occured to me. I've never had an addiction, it's not in my personality (thank God), but I've known a few that have, I've got family who are addicts. This book is incredible and a tremendous contribution. It has helped me understand what is/was possibly going on in the minds of those I know who are/have been addicted to drugs, who feel they just can't get through an hour without them. I'm amazed that the diary entries are so coherent for someone so strung out at the time. I also can't figure out how any of the Crue managed to function at all in the storm of all these drugs. This is a dark book, the illustrations are excellent and they along with the entries themselves never let you relax. I still love Motley Crue, always will. They defined my rock n' roll era. Now that I've read the book, I understand the band's lyrics much better. The music has taken on a deeper meaning now. I've gone back and listened to all my Motley Crue CDs and I've got more appreciation for the music and lyrics now that I've read this book. And having commentary included in the book from Nikki Sixx today as well as the other band members and their crew really gives this book a lot of depth. And while some of it is undeniably funny (the earthquake, the furniture in the elevator) it's also eye opening and sorrowful that one of our most talented rockers went through this. I've never thought drugs were cool and Nikki has just reaffirmed that(now don't get the idea that was a goody-goody; I had my wild side, I loved my alcohol and I dabbled in other things, I just never got hooked on anything and I count myself blessed after reading these diaries). This book is nothing short of extrodinary.

Nikki, it took a lot of guts to publish this book. I read it in a matter of days and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I'm glad you made it through. So many people don't. Hopefully this book will help stop that.
