Book Reviews of The Higher Power of LuckyBook Review: A must read for children Summary: 5 StarsThe Higher Power of Lucky is a heartwarming story of a pre-adolescent girl in search of something to believe in and trust. Having an absent father, a mother who has died, and an English woman who is trying to help raise her, Lucky is un sure of what is what in life. This story helps the reader to see that everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, and that being true to yourself is the best road to travel. As a teacher, I use this book in the classroom and find my "older" (middle and high school)students, can take away some very meaningful information. There is a reference to a "dog's scrotum" on the very first page although it is explained in time, when Lucky finally asks what it is.
Susan Patron has created awonderful story to be enjoyed by all.
Book Review: The Higher Power of just plain good prose Summary: 5 StarsWhat a pleasure to read this beautiful gem. No wonder it won the Newberry. Little things are really big things in this understated novel. This little girl struggling with the loss of her mother and the fear that her "Guardian" (who has become her new mother) will not stay to finish raising her tells us all a great deal about loss, grief, love, growing up, and community.
Book Review: A pleasent surprise indeed. Summary: 5 StarsForget about any negative comments you've heard about Lucky. This is a wonderfully told story that has unique characters, some down home and one who is . . . well, French. Let me say that the author has the storyline, pacing and dialog down and each element enables a crisp and refreshing read. I adore this book.
Imagine, if you will, growing up a girl, in the Mojave Desert, in a town that has a population of forty-three, you live in a trailer, and you have only two other kids to play with, and their both boys. For most it might sound like a nightmare, but in this delightful story we find that not only does life go on, but love and family are very strong indeed.
Without going into much detail, I will say that The Higher Power of Lucky is the journey of an orphan who has to come to terms with the fact she may be sent to an orphanage. And during the time we're with Lucky, we find her individual character. She, on the other hand, needs to find herself (her higher power) The others that populate this, often times, laugh-out-loud tale, are the types of characters that go to make a classic.
I'm rating tis book 5 stars because: It isn't your standard cup of tea. It isn't one of those books you buy and recycle the next day. It is a keeper and story with miles of heart. It is a story you'll never forget. Bravo! Ms. Patron!
Book Review: delightful and tender story Summary: 5 StarsI bought "The Higher Power of Lucky" for my 11-y.o. son, but intercepted it as soon as it arrived and read it straight through myself first. I wasn't screening it; I was hogging it, plain and simple. It is a delightful, tender story, beautifully written and with wonderful lessons for children on life, sorrow, loss, and redemption. Those who would deny themselves or their children this marvelous book because of the "s word" are losing out on one of the best children's books to come out in a long, long time.

Work in school library where all orders are on hold, so I wanted to review.
