Elizabeth Kostova's utterly suspenseful debut "The Historian" is a powerful, if long, thriller about the real mystery of Dracula; the mystery of Vlad the Impaler, a 15th century prince who's horrible treatment of his own people inspired Stoker's famous icon. But what if the real Dracula was indeed undead and lived down through the generations, living as a vampire just as his literary counterpart? This is the question that Kostova so brilliantly tells in her story, which weaves the plots of a nameless girl who discovers mysterious letters in her father's library describing the experiences of one Professor Rossi; which essentially starts a domino effect that leads to the truth about Dracula. Most of the story is told through the letters of the nameless girl's father, Paul, and his attempts to find Professor Rossi after he is kidnapped by Dracula. This story within a story crosses many borders, and eventually, the story comes full circle back to the young girl after her father goes missing. Kostova weaves many intricate plot lines into her narrative as effortlessly as the most skilled of novelists. While some might stray away from this book due to it's length, the utterly suspenseful and terrifying conclusion makes up for all of those tireless hours that the characters spend combing for clues to the whearabouts of Dracula's tomb. Kostova's debut is an impressive revival of the vampire genre, and if I, a sophmore in high school, can appreciate the skill that shines through her story, than any reader who enjoys a good thriller will also enjoy the history and excitment that can be found in "The Historian."
