Book Review: Fascinating and knowledgable but slightly overpowering
Summary: 4 Stars
Very factual, but maybe too much. This is by far the most comprehensive history of Saudi Arabia I have encountered, dealing with every tribal dispute from the insignificant to the state building. Alongside this historical basis there are powerful analysis of the effects of the oil companies, religious elements and current social and political structures. All in all it contains everything required for a thorough understanding of the evolution of the Saudi state.
However, it requires a certain pre existing knowledge of events in the greater middle east, casually dropping terms relating to outside developments. It also requires a great strength of memory to hold together the strand of narrative through the ever shifting tribal alliances, clashes of leadership and tiny oasis that change hands every few pages. There is just so much detail here that it is easy to lose the thread of the Saudi evolution. Analysis is also somewhat lacking, consigned to brief and rare sections scattered throughout. It would benefit greatly from end of chapter summarys.
As a factual background you can ask for nothing more, everything you need is here and more, the author is obviously an expert on the historical facts. But it requires great personal effort to create a coherent impression of the study.
