Book Reviews of The History of the Ancient World: From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of RomeBook Review: Thumbs up! Summary: 5 StarsMy children have liked and learned from Ms. Bauer's the Story of the World Series, and I am currently enjoying the added depth and adult perspectives of this history book.
I'm suprised, sometimes, at how much I enjoy these history books; history was never a favorite subject for me in college or high school.
Susan Wise Bauer is a master at making history come to life for both children and adults!
Book Review: Fascinating and easily readable account of ancient history Summary: 5 StarsThis book is an accessible collection of stories that make up what is known as Ancient History. Susan Wise Bauer brings humanity to great legends such as Gilgamesh and Abraham. The book also includes the often neglected histories of India and China. I recommend this title to anyone that loves stories in general, and is pursuing an understanding of Ancient History in particular.
Book Review: Wonderful intro to ancient history Summary: 5 StarsMy 5 year old son and I have been LOVING the Story of the World audio cd's with ancient history for children, so when I saw this version that just came out for "grown-ups" I had to buy it. I haven't finished it yet but so far it is great. Being a product of our wonderful public educational system, I have a few... shall we say... "gaps" in my knowledge of history. Anything between Mesopotamia and the Mayflower was a mystery. But Susan Wise Bauer has made this book into an easy to read great narrative that is making history come alive. Very highly recommended, and I am giving several as gifts.
Book Review: A Great Storyteller! Summary: 5 StarsWritten in Susan's inimitable style, this is a very readable book that just carries you along. If you think history is just a boring list of places, dates, and wars, this book will change your opinion in a hurry! This series promises to be just as wonderful as her Story of the World series for children--none of us are too old for great stories! The maps and timelines are great aids to understanding the flow of history.
Book Review: A Readable History--highly recommended!! Summary: 5 StarsMy sons and I have read and enjoyed Bauer's Story of the World series, so when I saw that this book was coming out I pre-ordered it. I thought it might be over our heads but we have enjoyed it immensely. The 11 yo snagged it and read 18 chapters the first day! I am not a history buff but I homeschool my kids so I am always on the lookout for good books. I found The History of the Ancient World to be much more readable, enjoyable, and cohesive than the high school and college history texts we have used previously. This book could be used to homeschool high school, but you don't have to be a homeschooler to enjoy it. I think anyone with an interest in ancient history would enjoy this book. The plethora of maps and timelines really make it easy to see connections. Highly recommended!
