Book Reviews of The Hobbit

Book Review: Good stuff, bad CD's
Summary: 3 Stars

Rob Inglis narrates this book, and has distinct voices for the characters. He is not dry and does not read in a monotone like most narrators. I found it an enjoyable experience, second only to Jim Dale in the Harry potter series.
As I said I'm picky... I would have given it a 5 star, but as the recording of the audio could be a bit better, and the CD's skip here and there throughout the story, it only gets 3 stars. The Audio levels go up and down a few times as well.

Book Review: Great Story, Great Audiobok!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Hobbit is just good clean fun, delightful for children and adults. If you've read LOTR and wondered how Bilbo got the ring, here's the story. I enjoyed Tolkien's omnicient narrator style in this book --somewhat like Thackeray's Vanity Fair, and more recently Clarke's Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell-- which I suppose he adopted because he was writing for children. I think it's charming.

I highly recommend the audiobook, read by Rob Inglis. He's a Royal Shakespeare company actor and the best audiobook reader I've ever heard (and I've heard a lot of them). He has a different voice for each dwarf, and he does a great Gollum, too. He actually sings the songs (nice voice!) and he even belches up ponies. The scene with the trolls is especially well-done. Mr. Ingliss could probably make one of Terry Goodkind's later books sound exciting, but The Hobbit actually is exciting and I highly recommend it for adults and kids.

Book Review: Great reading, great story but horrible disc quality.
Summary: 3 Stars

The title says it all. Great read by the narrator amazing story for young and old but the company that printed the discs did a terrible job I tried to play the discs on my Bose CD player and I can't get 20 minutes without the audio freezing. I got around this by putting all the CDs on my computer in iTunes and listening to it there. There is some minor audio skipping but it's barely noticeable when I play it on my IPod. BUT I REPEAT THESE DISCS WILL NOT PLAY ON CD PLAYER!!! Do not purchase unless you intend to put it on your computer. I'm giving it only 3 stars for the disc quality if this wasn't an issue it would be a solid 5 STARS!!

Book Review: Great!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a really nice unabridged reading of the Hobbit. It is a classic hero-epic tale, and the audio verson is a great way to introduce it to younger readers who are not ready to tackle it in print. It got two thumbs up from my 7 year old godson, and though violent in parts, it is considerably less intense than Lord of the Rings.
Also, as an adult who enjoyed this book as a child, I loved listening to it in the car on the way to work. The performance was first rate, and the material delightful. I also enjoyed going back and seeing the differences in Tolkien's concepts of characters and such between this book and Lord of the Rings.

Book Review: Hobbit
Summary: 5 Stars

"Now it is a strange thing, but things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpitating, or even gruesome may make a good tale, and take a great deal of telling anyway."
In The Hobbit, Tolkien has created his own world independent from our own. The fictitious Middle Earth is complete with its own history and family trees. Set in a time before Men are the reigning species, The Hobbit is unlike any other fantasy novel. The main character, Bilbo Baggins, is employed by a wizard with a questionable reputation called Gandalf. He's hired as a thief to travel with a band of dwarfs to steal back their long-lost treasure. Throughout his treacherous journey through Middle Earth, Bilbo battles fantastic Middle Earth creatures as well as his own fear. This book is a masterpiece no one should miss.
