You can read "The Horse Whisperer" in two days. Some people will find this novel highly entertaining, perhaps even moving, others ("real" Westerners in particular) will complain about the romanticized, stereotypical presentation of "Big Sky" Montana and the cheap ending. But "The Horse Whisperer" won't cause any long-term effects, positive or negative, in either group of readers. Reading this novel resembles listening to a Kenny G-tape: you like it or you don't like it, but it certainly won't change your life. "The Horse Whisperer" is a novel written for consumption (Hello, Hollywood!!), not for eternity. From that perspective, we can call Nicholas Evans' bestSELLER a very "modern" novel, no matter if you think it is great reading or just a big waste of time (and money)
