Book Reviews of The Horse Whisperer

Book Review: A Total Disapointment!!
Summary: 2 Stars

I was expecting at least a decent story, due to all the good reviews of friends and fellow horse owners/riders, but this book was pitiful. It dragged on and on, supported bad values and morals, and was totally empty, with unrealistic events and characters. I can't believe so many people think it's a "classic", or "one of the best reads of their life". I hope Evans keeps practicing, 'cause this book sucked!!

Book Review: A beautiful Story
Summary: 5 Stars

A novel of epic proportions. Beautifully written, and deep understanding of horses, people and relationships. A very hard book to put down, once I began reading. As a horse lover, I understood alot of what "the horse whisperer" was trying to convey. A novel recommended for everyone, whether into horses or not. I think the ending was out of character for Tom, but thought that maybe he sacrificed his life (showing his palms to the stallion), because, I believe, Annie and Grace had become to mean everything to him, and because he loved Annie so much, and the fact she was married, life may have become impossible to live with. A pity she wasn't there when he looked to say goodbye, as I believe, he knew then, he was going to die. Thats just my thoughts. I look forward very much to the movie, to see how the scenes, particulary the crash with the truck, are portrayed. 10 out of 10. Mells.

Book Review: A beautiful book, but it did not need the love story.
Summary: 4 Stars

5 stars, 1 star, 5 stars, one star. I've been going through reviews and feel obliged to enter my opinion, though I hadn't planned on it when I began. So here goes, for the people who read the one at the end of the list of 322! The writing and description were beautiful. You could see the places described. (yes, I live in MT, but that's beside the point) I don't think anyone can truely cut that statement up. The characters were THERE. Robert was put in the background just enough to let the main story go on without him. Annie was....the worst character, to put it bluntly. Grace was the most real. Being around her age myself, I can relate with a bit more insight to her problems, those at home and at school. Having an imagination (as I get the feeling some of the writers of the above reviews did not) I can think how it must be to be handicaped all of a sudden. To be no longer independent, which is probably the biggest thing that teenagers strive for these days. The relationship between she and her mother is more than believable. I should know...! Tom is a great character, until about a third of the way into the book. There is no way he could change so much. And he wasn't the suicide type, even after he changed. I hear the Mr. Redford didn't like the ending and changed it. I hope it is for the better. I think it would by no means have hurt the book to focus more on the horse and the "horse whispering" which is what the whole thing was named for after all. And also to have cut out the love story completely. I thought this book was going to be the family and the horse, dealing with getting back together after the accident, with the help of the horse whisperer. To me, that sounds like a great plot in itself. Sure, it needs a little something to make the climax near the end, but it DID NOT have to turn into a soap opera to do that. To sum it up, I enjoyed the thing all the way through, but at various levels of enjoyment, with a wide range between each.

Book Review: A big disappointment. Went for cheap emotional ploys.
Summary: 1 Stars

I feel like a complete sucker for wasting any time on this book. It could just have easily been written by Judith Krantz - but at least with a Krantz book you know what you're getting into. The idea of a "horse whisperer" is very intruiging, but it was certainly not developed here. It only pretended to be. Once I switched into trying to think of it only as a book about the character's interrelationships, I still found it completely lacking. The motivations for their actions were unbelievable and I found that I really didn't care for any of them. I could not finish it, and I can only say that about < 5 books in my entire life.

Book Review: A bland, poorly written book, mediocre and dull at it's best
Summary: 1 Stars

I was very, very underwhelmed after having trudged my way through this book. The story is told in a flat and unremarkable way, the characters are unlikable and one dimensional, the plot is unrealistic-it is a story that lacks both imagination, believability, and foundation. The ending felt like a cop out. This book reads like it was written for a third grader. The publisher of this book should feel like a sucker for paying Mr. Evans such an enormous sum for such Drivel; I know I feel like a sucker for buying it and actually reading it. The only reason I didn't toss it after the first two chapters, was because I was in total disbelief that such a hyped book could actually be so awful. I felt it HAD to get better somewhere. The joke was on me.
