Book Reviews of The Host: A NovelBook Review: A Little Disappointed... Summary: 3 Stars
I loved the Twilight Series (even though I'm a little older than 'young adult' :) but was somewhat disappointed in The Host. I agree with some of the other reviews written about the beginning being very slow, and I myself, almost put the book down until I read other comments stating the book gets better after the first 80-90 pages or so. If I hadn't read these comments, I probably wouldn't have finished the book. Unfortunately, it took quite a while to get going, but I did like after the first several chapters. I am a fan of Stephanie Meyer since reading the Twilight books. I can't wait for Breaking Dawn and the upcoming movie. Hopefully she will not stop the Twilight Series.
Book Review: A Must-Read! Summary: 5 Stars
As a die-hard Twilight fan, I decided to read The Host and am more than satisfied. Stephenie Meyer once again created a fascinating story which I just couldn't put down. I wouldn't say I am interested in science fiction what so ever, but I still enjoyed this book. Like the Twilight series, it's a thriller with a romantic twist, my most favorite genre! The Host is unlike anything I've ever read before and would recommend it to anyone. I can truly understand why it's a bestseller. It's such a great book!
Book Review: A New Favorite Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not one to rah-rah every new book that comes out by the latest author - in fact, I nose through their books with great skepticism and often find them utterly lacking.
So I was pleasantly surprised at 4:30am this morning when I turned the last page and looked up to see if it was time to go to bed yet. The book had wrapped me up in the heart-racing intrigue and made me feel personally invested in the characters. I couldn't put the book down long enough to look at the clock, even when my eyes began to swim and the words on the page were no longer completely in focus. I had to know the ending! It's been a long time since a modern book has drawn me in so completely.
Meyer describes her book as science fiction for those who don't like science fiction. The basic premise involves aliens who think themselves benign doing the unthinkable and taking over human bodies, suffocating the surviving consciousness. What hope is there and why read a book that begins after the humans have already lost the war? It's a fascinating journey that keeps your mind on its toes.
My only complaint is the amount of space it takes up on my shelf. I would love to have a hardback copy with smaller font and less space between the lines - it would also make skipping over some of the drawn out scenes a little easier. I will point out, however, that the "filler" is what grounds this imaginative book in a greater sense realty. What a character does during periods of waiting says just as much as their performance during times of stress.
Book Review: A Really GREAT Book! Summary: 5 Stars
I have just finished reading this book for the second time. I wanted to re-read it to catch anything I missed during the first reading. It was definitely worth my time, and held up well the second time around.
I am a fan of the Twilight series, but I feel this book is better than the Twilight books. It has a Sci-Fi basis, but isn't loaded down with too much technical information. It is essentially about relationships, human and otherwise.
A VERY satisfying read, and I truly hope she is working on a sequel.
Book Review: A Refreshing Surprise Summary: 5 Stars
I have to admit that I wasn't sure I was going to like this book. The old saw is that you can't judge a book by its cover but that's exactly what drew me to this one. That eye, with its silver aureole, is mesmerizing and it practically pulled me in to the book. I was familiar with Meyer because I had bought her vampire books for my niece (who LOVED them), but had never read her myself, even though I write about vampires myself (shameless plug: In the Blood). THE HOST gave me the chance to delve into this new literary phenomenon on an adult level.
I was not disappointed. THE HOST, by virtue of its doorstop thickness, looks daunting, but once you begin reading, the pages practically turn themselves. Meyer has crafted a story even someone who doesn't like sci-fi (such as myself) can love. Why? Because she creates characters you can really come to love and sympathize with...plus she gives you two great characters rolled up into one body. Such a deal. She also has created a believeable consistent universe and an intriguing premise: the inhabitation of Earth by aliens who take over their "host's" bodies and make the world a more harmonious, if blander, place.
I will look for more from Meyer and may even look beyond the YA label of her Twilight series and delve into that. But even if you're not one for YA, vampires, or even science-fiction, THE HOST is one great read.
