Book Reviews of The Husband

Book Review: engrossing but forgettable
Summary: 3 Stars

This is the first Dean Koontz book I've read. I admit I stayed up all night to finish it and it was practically a one-sitting read. The first half I liked better than the last, because it became a bit far-fetched and not too believable on plot. It was very readable and hard to put down, but once I finished it I felt like I had wasted my time. I guess I've gotten to the point that I don't read fiction too much and want to be moved enough to feel changed or challenged or affected in some way.
This book had some disturbing parts and I don't like violence much. It isn't gory and most would say the disturbing portions were "mild" but I'm a sensitive reader. It definitely makes time pass but is just an escape and not much of an inspiring read. That probably wasn't Koontz' goal, though.

ATTENTION: the discussion and the Q and A w/author on the amazon page have some SPOILERS! I would suggest not reading UNTIL after you read the book, IF you decide to read it.

Thus three stars because I can't recommend this wholeheartedly. See below:

Recommended to those who want an escape read that will keep you interested

Not recommeded if you want to feel like you have learned something or feel moved by the plot/storyline.

Book Review: first ever let down
Summary: 2 Stars

I have to say that this is the first Koontz book I have ever failed to finish. I'm going on vacation soon; I plan to drink all night, everynight. Maybe this will provide the inspiration to finish the story. I love his stories enough to suspend my disbelief long enough to finish and appreciate them. With this one it was impossible. Could be that he is being pushed to author too many books within a certain period of time. He is getting old, after all. The more he writes before he is incapable the more his publisher and his estate benefit; though it is difficult to pigeon-hole Koontz as a money grabber.
I love his stories so I won't post details of my disappointment, I don't wish to spar with legions of my own, fellow fans. I hope he gets an eye on this, decides to put his foot down, get through his current contractual obligations(I am not a tree hugging anarchist, I expect him to follow through on his contracts), and settle into his usual, incredible, and thoroughly entertaining stories.

Book Review: just plain bad
Summary: 2 Stars

"The Husband" has a good hook in the beginning, but the plot slowly degenerates and falls apart after the twist in the middle, which is difficult to swallow. The so-called "action" sequences are made artificially suspenseful by the protagonist's theorizing about tactics for pages at a time, such as arguing with himself how to shoot into the backseat of a car from the trunk. The ending was abrupt and unsatisfying. The bad guys were unnecessarily evil with zero texture and depth.

Book Review: rambling
Summary: 2 Stars

I am not sure how anyone can like this book or most koontz books for that matter. This one especially has pages and pages of rambling about possible scenarios in someones head that could take place. For example when he is in the trunk of the car and wants to shoot the other guy it just gets rediculous. I found it painful to read. Well...what if i shoot and it hits his shoulder and he as able to turn and shoot me back(3 pages) what if i shoot and there is a metal plate in the back of the seat that stops the bullet(5 pages) what if my gun jams and he hears the click (4 pages)what if i shoot him and the bullet isnt actually lead and it is just a BB, could happen (2 pages) what if i move to shoot and he feels the car move and he shoots me (3 pages) what if i shoot, hit the gas tank, which leaks on the starter, which sparks and the bad man smells smoke...or worse yet a fire starts ( 4 pages) this sound familiar to anyone???? Not to mention the twist in the middle of the book that just comes out of nowhere (in a bad way because it is rediculous) and then the 2 pages at the end of the book he uses to sum up all the open story lines....leave this one on the shelf trust me....but what if i leave it on the shelf and it falls and starts a fire, then the fire wakes up my wife...and then my dog wakes up and barks...and then i have to get up...it could happen....has too..... <---i just wrote my own koontz chapter

Book Review: zzzzzz
Summary: 1 Stars

I can't get through it. This will be one of the rare times I do not finish reading a book that I started. I am ending this on page 121. I used to read ALL of Dean Koontz's books - has my taste changed, or his writing? Do we automatically pick up a book by an author who, at one time, we coudn't wait for his next book to be published? Since that could be the case, this is one of the rare times I will provide an opinion.
