Book Reviews of The HusbandBook Review: Another amazing tale from Koontz Summary: 5 Stars
I couldn't put it down! I read the whole book in one setting. Don't pick it up until you have time to immerse yourself in another wonderful story.
Book Review: Another awesome book by Koontz Summary: 5 Stars
This is an amazing book. Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down just like all the other books by Dean Koontz. He keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the whole book. Love the perfect balance between love and action. I love how Mitch gains confidence to do anything just to get his wife back, even act out of his own personality! This book is definitely a must buy and a must read.
Book Review: Another good one by Koontz Summary: 4 Stars
As usual, Koontz' writing is superb. For the most part, unlike many other popular writers, the quality has not deteriorated over the years. However, this story was a bit too Hollywoodish for my tastes, which is why I gave it a 4. Not to say I didn't enjoy it. It was definitely a page turner and one of those "late in the night" books. Well worth the read.
Book Review: Awesome book ! Could not put it down !!! Summary: 5 Stars
This book was my first Koontz novel. It convinced me to seek for other great thrillers written by this unique author. The intro chapters are terrific !! They will keep you turning pages on and on for hours, I swear it !
The main character, a modest gardener, is wuite interesting. The intrigue is a non-stop race in time (and cash) for a husband to save the wife he loves. One of the best thriller I have read so far. Highly recommended !
Book Review: Barely 3 Stars Summary: 3 Stars
Before I even start this review I need to post a disclaimer. I am not a Dean Koontz fan in the most literal interpretation. I have bought a number of his books both used, and most recently new, and enjoyed some a lot. Some of his recent publications I liked so much that I never regret buying his pocketbooks new.(I am not fanatical enough to buy hardcover). This title was close to a disappointment though. Closest he has come to letting down this reader in fact.
It is the Story of Mitch an everyday gardener/landscaper whose life gets a shock when he is informed his wife is kidnapped and the kidnappers demand a $2 million dollar ransom. The story then twists and turns with several plot shockers. As Mitch struggles to come up with the money for ransom his wife is at the mercy of her kidnappers.
There were elements of another recent novel VELOCITY in this tale. However everything Koontz did right in Velocity he seemed to do wrong here. Both had suspenseful elements moreso than any supernatural factors and themes of when bad stuff happens to good people. However Velocity's pacing and overall storytelling I found more gripping. In The Husband Koontz seems to have had a deadline looming over his head for publication and it seemed like a rushed effort on his part. In other words it seemed like an uneven novel in many ways. Although Koontz continued his apt characterization in some ways with at least Mitch the main characterm one of the villians who shall remain unnamed to prevent spoilers seemed like a caricature. He was built from the ground up to be an excellent Koontz villian with the prerequisite past and psychological profiling then about halfway or two thirds into the novel it seemed (and I apologize for rampant speculation trying to decipher Koontz's motives)as a reader)that Koontz worried his bad guy was still a little too sympathetic to readers' so he upped the evilness with a brief explanation of his crimes that were despicable no doubt but seemed to fit in more like a shock factor than part of his character or the story.
I do NOT regret buying this novel it had its moments of entertainment yet would really only give it 2 1/2 stars if that was possible as it struck me as possibly the most mediocre book I have read by Koontz yet. The unevenness of writing as mentioned, combined with a lack of depth of his usual characterization beyond the hero and an overlong story makes me caution those potential readers' that like me are not die-hard Koontz fans. It is not terrible either in premise or execution of plot but is longer than it could have been. A would be exceptional short story was dragged into an average novel.
So if you are a diehard Koontz fan no doubt you'll agree with the critics and love every sentence and page and more power to you enjoy. But if you are like me and a casual "fan" or even unacquainted with Dean Koontz I recommend you try another title to introduce yourself to the bestselling author's work.
