Book Reviews of The HusbandBook Review: Bored for the first 150 pages Summary: 3 Stars
I love Dean Koontz, but I almost put this book down. I really had a hard time getting into it, which really surprised me. After 150 pages, the pace picked up and it finally grabbed my interest. I was glad I bought a used version. Hate to pay full price for a book that left me wanting more.
Book Review: Classic Koontz Summary: 5 Stars
Dean Koontz is an amazing writer of human psyche. He understands what it takes to make a person achieve a higher goal - even if it means that he must sacrifice his beliefs in order to save his wife. The husband commits several murders and acts of violence that he never thought he was capable of. How far would you go to save someone you love? I know that for me, I would be capable of the same if that would mean I could protect my daughter. It's that understanding that draws us near the character and makes us empathize with him. I could not put this book down; always wanting to know what came next.
Book Review: Close to 4 stars, but too many unfinished bunny trails Summary: 3 Stars
This was recommended by a co-worker. I loved the storyline and most of the character development. There were several odd bunny trails that were left hanging after the end. That was a bit distracting. Overall a good read, that kept my interest.
Book Review: Cooked to Perfection Summary: 5 Stars
One of Dean Koontz's many skills is coaxing the reader to keep reading. Mr. Koontz knows how to stoke the coals until the plot is cooked to perfection. Each twist is hard to anticipate and hard to ignore; each page makes turning more pages inevitable. There's no stagnation in his stories.
And, the effectiveness of the plot comes, in part, from strong characters. Mr. Koontz knows his characters well. A reader senses that he has "been in the moment" with each of them and knows what they are feeling and why. He has studied each scene from each character's vantage point and the reactions are consistent throughout.
This particular novel is slightly similar to my debut novel, Wearing the Spider, as both main characters are being framed and cannot explain the evidence that accumulates around them, although the circumstances are completely different. As in my novel, there is a reluctance to involve the authorities for various reasons, which plays into the suspense, as the authorities close in on their own. Since I write thrillers myself, I read Mr. Koontz's work as a student as well as an admirer. There are truly great passages in this book and, overall, it is a highly entertaining read.

Book Review: Could I be this good of a Husband? Summary: 5 Stars
The whole time I was reading this I was wondering if I could be that good of a husband. Koontz understands the mind of good people who grew up under tough circumstances and it comes across in his work. A simple gardener is forced by circumstance to rise above his perceptions of himself to become the hero and save the life of his wife. She is the reason he is who he is, and he is wise enough to know it. The concept is entertaining, and the execution if fun to follow. Koontz delivers plenty of his trademark twists and turns along the way. This one along with many of his better recent works have almost gotten me to forgive him for naming the bad guy in "Intensity" Edgler VESS. I mean come on how close is that to Edd Voss?
