Book Reviews of The Husband

Book Review: Dean Koontz - Husband
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the very best from Dean Koontz. I would have been disappointed if I had known beforehand what to expect. It is a thriller that I enjoyed very much and was not able to put the book down until I had finished it. Excellent, thrilling reading.

Book Review: Dean's New Formula
Summary: 3 Stars

I struggled with what rating to give this book. This is a *good* Koontz book..which equates to an *excellent* Patterson book, and the way Grisham is writing lately, is a *groundbreaking* book for him. Thats how much better Koontz is than his contemporaries. All of Dean's strengths shine here: character development, pure evil as the antagonist, intense writing with twists and turns, and exquisitely written settings and environments.

But anyone who knows the *prime* Dean Koontz (Strangers, Watchers), knows this is not typically his formula. It's almost as if, upon responding to pressures from his publisher in regards to Patterson's commercial success, he tried emulating his stories. Or maybe he's just trying out new themes. Dean's classics have included themes like government conspiracies, time travel, DNA mixing and experimentation, or pure sci-fi. Like I said, this is a basic kidnapping/ransom story that seemed like it was right out of Patterson's playbook. Its almost as if Dean read one of his books and said "He makes how much? I can do better than this!". Well, he can, and he did. It's just not the kind of plot line and theme where Koontz really shines. A *good* book for him, and a *great* book for anyone else, and compared to anything else thats out nowadays. This guy can write!

Book Review: Decent summer read....I guess.
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this book because I left my other one on the plane and needed something to read on vacation. I read a Koontz horror novel about 20 years ago, and remember thinking he was a far cry from Stephen King.

The Husband starts off well, with good pace and plenty of intrigue, but looses its way and ends up unsatisfying. The reviews suggest a book full of 'twists and turns', but there is really only one, and a fairly predictable one at that. Koontz does a nice job building up the main character and his wife, but introduces a bunch of other people that he pretty much ignores, and makes you wonder why he brought them in. The mental instability of one of the kidnappers is pretty interesting, but don't expect to find out why he is the way he is.

Koontz also weighs down the book with too much rambling hyperbole. He needs to realize he will never be nominated for the Pulitzer; it might help him get on with the story. Anyway, I guess this an okay summer read, but I won't read another Koontz book for at least another 20 years.

Book Review: Definitely another fast paced page-turner
Summary: 5 Stars

I must confess, having read all of Koontz's work, the Husband took me by surprise because the plot opens more like a crime drama. As Mitch (the Husband) investigates sources of cash to rescue his wife from a gang of maniacs who kidnapped her, the plot twists and turns and suddenly the suspense level jumps to where it's hard to put down. I would hate to spoil it for you by telling too much. If you like Koontz's style, this one is a classic, and will keep you up past your bedtime. Keep it on your bookshelf, you'll enjoy it again sooner than you expect.

Book Review: Disappointing ending
Summary: 1 Stars

The book was interesting until the last. It was action packed up until the final few chapters. It never actually tied up all the loose ends that was the book story line. He rescued his wife - then left all the details of "clean-up" hanging. Det Taggert -- how was he connected??? Why did the brother plan such a scheme???? The next chapter jumped 3 yrs ahead in time. What a let down after spending the time reading this book.
