Book Reviews of The Ice Limit

Book Review: Chilling Epic Tragedy
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the authors' best yet. Those reviewers who note that Preston and Child merely stay true to their usual adventure formula are only half right. The elements remain the same, but they turn their own style on its ear. Where P&C usually write epic melodrama, The Ice Limit is an epic tragedy.

A billionaire with delusions of grandeur is after a hitherto undiscovered prize: a mammoth meteorite on an island off the coast of Peru. Everyone on the crew he hires for the dangerous expedition to seize it has something to prove: the meteorite expert wants desperately to prove he has found an intergalactic rock, the captain of the ship wants to prove herself to her colleagues after losing a former vessel, the head of the firm engineering the rock's transport to the States wants to prove there is still no feat beyond his incomparable skills...and a mad Peruvian sea captain wants to prove his continued worth by stopping them all from succeeding.

The suspense is superior, the action gripping. The characters are quite likeable and complex, and living through the harrowing experiences they share is emotionally wrenching.

Some previous reviewers have noted that this book virtually demands a sequel. I couldn't agree more. But don't let that deter you from this stand-alone action-adventure epic. It's simply fantastic.

Book Review: Cool as ice, and no limit to the entertainment.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the best, most informative, and most READABLE books I've come across in a while since Phil Nutman's Wet Work. And I like some of the trivia information provided as well, most especially quoted by the character Rachel Amira who said that the brain uses more calories in a minute thinking than the body does jogging. I am ready to agree with that, come to think of it - no wonder high school brains are so slim! Good characters, esp the ever - ready Eli Glinn, the determined Palmer Lloyd, the protagonist MacFarlane, Captain Britton, and of course, Dr Brambell and Rachel. Okay, include the incorruptible Vallenar. And what kind of a name is Rolvaag? This is a great work, and to quote a passage in the early pages, here it is: I can't wait for the movie.

Book Review: Couldn't Put It Down
Summary: 5 Stars

The Ice Limit is on my ten best list. I was reading this book late into the night knowing I'd struggle to get up the next morning. I would say, "Okay, one more chapter." But, before I knew it, it was three more.

I've read a handful of books by Preston and Child. Although I like them all, The Ice Limit is my favorite. It's packed with adventure, and I mean packed. The characters are great. The authors' description of the characters made me grow attached to them. And for as many characters as were in the book, this was quite a feat.

The premise itself was fascinating. I'm a sucker for plots dealing with the unknown. In this case, the unknown is a meteor. The bulk of the book involves the efforts to extract the meteor from the ice and return it to Palmer Lloyd's museum. Needless to say, this is not a simple process. Beyond the environmental issues, the characters had to deal with sabotage, a mad Chilean (?) navy captain, and the meteor's strange properties.

The climax of the novel left me breathless, and the ending left me wanting more. The last final twist got me; I did not foresee it.

If you're looking for a fast read with lots of adventure and an intelligent plot, pick up The Ice Limit and settle in for a wild ride.

Book Review: Couldn't put it down!
Summary: 5 Stars

It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a books as much as "The Ice Limit," and I honestly couldn't stop reading. Buying this novel is money well spent.

Book Review: Decent but definitely far from great
Summary: 3 Stars

Typical Preston and Child formula: an unlikely hero + a rich enterpreneur who will stop at nothing + an untimely romance + a villian that seems almost unstopple = something outer-worldly.

Like Crichton, this duo has a knack for writing page-turning thrillers that toss in just the right amount of scientific fact which make their novels almost believable. But, come on guys, didn't I read the same story in THUNDERHEAD and RIPTIDE? The only originality to this latest installment in techo-thrillers is the cliff-hanger ending (sorry if that gives anything away, folks). In fact, I'm certain that I've never looked more forward to a sequel because I feel THE ICE LIMIT was only the tip of the iceberg (bad joke).

All in all, though, THE ICE LIMIT is a fun read and filled with everything that makes this sort of novel so much fun. It's total escape-ism with a twist ending at it's best -- and who isn't looking for that these days?
