Book Reviews of The Ice LimitBook Review: Decent story with horrible ending. Summary: 3 Stars
Preston and Child have written some great books with a typial formula= Some rich person gets together a team of all the leading experts to go on some great expedition with tragic results usually involving a good character who does a 180 and becomes the antagonist. The same applies here, except the ending seems really rushed and leaves too many unanswered questions, with somewhat of a cliffhanger. My advise is to read the book and skip the very last chapter.
Book Review: Definitely not a great read Summary: 2 Stars
Well..I'm a Preston/Child fan but thought this story was boring and tedious. I couldn't sympathize with the characters and couldn't have cared less what happened to them at the end. I actually found myself speed reading through the book just so I could get done with it. Needless to say, I was very disappointed as I've loved every other book of theirs that I've read. This was just barely readable as far as I'm concerned. Stick with the Pendergast stories.
Book Review: Don't forget to pack your mukluks! Summary: 4 Stars
In The Ice Limit, Preston and Child have come up with an original realistic adventure that takes the reader to one of the most uninhabitable places on earth. The thing that impresses me most about this duo is the thoroughness of their research. Every time they write a book on a new subject or profession, it comes across like they've been doing it all their lives. The facts, lingo, and points of view are always right on target and ICE LIMIT is no exception. My initial impulse was to give this book the typical praise of all the P/C books I've read but after thinking about it I'd have to say this book moved a little slower than most. That's not to say that it wasn't interesting. It just didn't carry the element of suspense and thrill that books like Relic and Riptide did. Yes, there was always the element of what exactly is this thing they are digging up and there were a few monkey wrenches thrown in by the locals but I can't really consider that thrilling or all that suspenseful. Toward the end, the book did pick up steam and ended as a real page-turner. That's not to say I didn't enjoy this book. The detailed writing of the settings, people, and operations were top notch and interesting. The plot was well planned and wonderfully written. The characters were well developed. I would say that ICE LIMIT was a better written book than Riptide; probably on par with Mount Dragon. It had enough plot twists to keep you guessing but lacked the excitement (at least in the first ¾ of it) of some of their other books. Still a recommended read at 4 stars.
Book Review: Don't read before bed!! You will not sleep!!! Summary: 5 Stars
That scary? Not really. But this novel is so very gripping that you will be completely unable to put it down. I was captivated by the thorough scientific journey Preston-Child takes you on. These are two excellent writers. There are plots in those minds that could never be imagined anywhere else. I would recommend Cabinets of Curiosities as well.
If you dislike binding scientific thrillers, by all means avoid these two. But for the sane world, read on! You won't be disappointed by the end. Not many can keep my attention these days, but these two are worth it. Add them to your library. I'm planning which ones to buy next already.
Book Review: Don't read the back of the book... Summary: 2 Stars
The back side of this paperback pretty much tells you everything that happens plot wise, except what happens in the last couple of chapters. Pretty boneheaded copy writing there. Totally spoiled the enjoyment of this pretty decent adventure novel. Tho, it mostly reads like a prologue for a sequel. (Not that one's been written as far as I know of... )
