I went through a period in high school where I read a lot of Victoria Holt novels. But India Fan was the first book of hers I read, and it remains one of my all time favorite books. There is something about the Framling family, seen through the eyes of cautious, plain Drusilla, that really appeals to me. Holt manages to educate the reader about England's long and tangled history with India in a way that entertains and heightens the love story. I re-read this book about once a year, and have already gone through one copy completely. For me, Drusilla, Fabian, Dougal, Polly, Effie and even Lavinia, are old friends. If you want to give a Holt book a chance, this is definitely the one I'd recommend to start with!
