Book Reviews of The Indie Bible 10th EditionBook Review: Lots of promise, but ultimately let me down Summary: 2 Stars
First off, let me say there is a good amount of information in the Indie Bible. The problem is that the contacts listed aren't anything that can't be readily found on the internet with time spent searching. However, I didn't want to search through the internet to update my database, so I thought purchasing the Indie Bible would be a quick way to beef up my current database. Wrong.
Many of the contacts listed don't have actual contact information. For example, for Pitchfork, only an address, fax # and web address is given. In other words, exactly what's given on Pitchfork's website-- no specific editor email addresses are listed. There are many sources listed where no actual contact info is listed- just a web address or maybe a physical address. For Sirius XMU, only a web address is given and it looks like the author/ editor simply copied the web address from his browser. The biggest problem with the Indie Bible is that many contacts lack specific contact information beyond a general email address-- who knows where the email ends up. The point of purchasing a database is to get your hands on the names of people you really need to talk to, the decision makers. Good luck doing that with the Indie Bible.
There are also a few out of date contacts. I know, from my own database, that some of the contacts listed in the Indie Bible are out of date, or simply just wrong. It makes me wonder how much time was spent fact checking and verifying sources.
Something else that really bugged me was that the electronic edition doesn't contain hyperlinks. How hard would it have been to include mail and web links for each email and web address? Doing so would have made the electronic version infinitely more helpful. Having the ability to export the addresses would have been nice too, but I know that I'm pipe dreaming on that one when even an email or web link isn't included.
And please do away with the ads. I already purchased the book, and I'm in no mood to be sold to. Honestly, if I were an advertiser, I'd think twice before placing another ad in the Indie Bible.
Bottom line: if you are brand new to either the internet or the music "industry" and don't know how to use Google, this book might be extremely useful. Otherwise, save your money and purchase a real database.
