Book Reviews of The Innocent

Book Review: Groaner
Summary: 2 Stars

PUH-LEEEEEEEZE!

I just finished this groaner. It could not conceivably have been more contrived and convoluted. When you get to the end (if you foolishly read it all, as I did) you will let out an AUDIBLE moan of utter disbelief.

If stars were awarded for "cringe factor," this book would earn a ten!

Book Review: Harlan Coben
Summary: 5 Stars

Very good book. Harlan Coben is such a good writer. Would recommend this book to anyone.

Book Review: I miss Myron
Summary: 4 Stars

Over the years, I've become addicted to Coben and his sports agent hero, Myron. The Innocent does not feature Myron and subsequently does not live up to the level of other Coben books. While The Innocent is well written with lots of plot turns and surprises, the characters are not as interesting and dynamic as in the Myron novels. I will still recommend this book, but, If I was steering someone to Coben, there are better choices.

Book Review: If Harlan Coben Wrote a Book a Day, I'd Die of Sleep Depravation
Summary: 5 Stars

Sister Mary Rose, a nun in New Jersey dies. She had breast implants. Why? Was she not who she appeared to be? One of the last calls she made was to Matt Hunter's Sister-in-Law. Matt got in a fight in college and accidentally killed a man. He spent four years in jail. Years ago he met a girl in Las Vegas, she's back in his life now, having been East on business and accidentally (or not) running into Matt. They marry and she gets pregnant. Years ago in Vegas a stripper was murdered, now her daughter is trying to find her birth mother. An FBI agent thinks maybe the nun's last call might have been to Matt. Matt gets photos of his pregnant wife with another man. That other man seems to be taunting Matt. A childhood chum of Matt's, who is not a cop, seems to want to put Matt back in the slammer. Matt doesn't want to go.

And from the above Harlan Coben weaves a thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. How does he do it? It's simply beyond me. Every Coben book seems to be better, twister, faster, more fun than the last. I swear if the man wrote a book a day I'd die of sleep depravation.

Book Review: If you can completely suspend common sense...
Summary: 4 Stars

You really have to suspend all aspects of your common sense to enjoy this book. Luckily, I'm good at that, so I ended up enjoying the book a lot. Even so, there were times when I was just shaking my head saying "really? seriously?". Convoluted storyline to say the least, BUT...

This was my first book by this author and I really did enjoy it. His character development is simply amazing. With all of the different characters in this book, one would think it would be pretty much surface written, but he did an excellent job of digging into them.

He also kept me turning the pages. He would give just a little bit at the end of the chapter so I HAD to keep reading. Just had to. A well written, well crafted thriller that really did keep me going.

I will say that someone in my book club chose this. It's not really "book club material" so I'm not sure what the discussion will be like, but at least it was something different :)

This is worth a read when you need something to drag you into another world for several hours. It's definitely one to grab.
