Book Reviews of The InnocentBook Review: Good read Summary: 4 Stars
This was a very good read, not his best book but well worth reading.THE INNOCENT' is non-stop action and will have you turning the pages so quickly your fingers will burn. Every character is strong and well developed and the story is thoroughly engrossing. So you may be wondering why with all of this high praise did I only give it 4 stars? Well, while I knew to expect Coben's signature twist at the end, I thought that maybe there was just one twist to many in this ending.
Book Review: Good, but convoluted Summary: 3 Stars
I am a big fan of Harlan Coben and anxiously awaited this book. Like most of his books, this one requires a healthy dose of suspended disbelief. However, I found I could only suspend it so far. About three quarters of the way through, it just got too crazy. And, unlike any Coben book before, I figured out the ending before I got there (I won't reveal it and be a spoiler). However, I liked the characters and the story and anything by Coben is better then most of the stuff out there
Book Review: Good, but not Great - 3.5 Stars Summary: 4 Stars
Matt Hunter served time in prison for an accident that wasn't his fault. Upon release, he tries to put his life back together and seems to have done so, until he gets a picture sent to him on his camera phone. The picture is of his wife and his life starts to unravel. The novel is very entertaining and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Unfortunately, Harlan believes that his readers are only reading his books for the trick endings, so he throws in one too many tricks and the book seems not merely contrived, but also disjointed.
I am a fan of Harlan Coben, but I am concerned that he is now writing books to merely try to trick the reader as much as possible. I would rate the books as 3.5 stars because it is a 4-5 star book throughout, but then the end is thrown together so quickly and haphazardly, that the book falls below four stars.
Book Review: Great Book - but read it fast! Summary: 4 Stars
Best enjoyed if read in a couple of days. Don't start it if you will have a lot of interruptions. The long cast of characters, plot twists and sub-plots make it necessary for the reader to follow closely to enjoy the journey.
The prologue draws the reader in quickly, introducing us to the main character, Matt Hunter - a decent upstanding college student with a bright future ahead of him. One fateful night changes all that. He and his best buddy attend a college party where a senseless incident incites a drunken brawl and Matt finds himself in the midst of it coming to the defense of his buddy, and in the process causing the accidental death of another student. Just like that, his future is forever altered as he is convicted of manslaughter and sent to prison. Fast forward to the present - 9 years later he is out of prison, happily married and buying his first home when a strange cell phone message alters his life once again, and so the ride begins.
If you like fast paced thrillers, you won't be disappointed in The Innocent. I read it in two days and agree with a couple of other reviewers that the plot is rather "convoluted" - there is a lot going on here, but that is what makes it so interesting. This is my first Coben book and I have already ordered more. I like his style of writing. He doesn't need the "F" word in every sentence to make his point, or long, drawn out details. It's just a great fiction novel, my favorite kind.
Unlike a couple of other reviewers, I even liked the ending. Coben ties up all the loose ends and leaves the reader with a satisfactory conclusion to it all. I hate to be left wondering about some things. I want a real ending to a novel!
Buy it, you will like it!
