Book Reviews of The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical

Book Review: Be ready for a revolution!
Summary: 5 Stars

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone that dosen't want to look at the world in a radical new way. If you think you are "Christian" read this and take a long hard look in the mirror..

It is a great read and very eye opening and thought provoking.

Book Review: Being "real" about being Christian
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is a "must read" for all Christians. Even if we have legitimate reasons for not going the distance as Shane Claiborne is doing, there are other ways we can support such ministries as well as roll up our sleeves and join in. Most excellent perspective.

Book Review: Best book I've read in years!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Amazing book! What does it look like to love Jesus and others by actually being his hands and feet? Shane actually asks those questions and tries to find others who actually are. This challenged me and opened my eyes to my own complacent life and selfishness. Shane is full of love and compassion for his readers and others in his neighborhood and around the world. What does love look like lived out? Is it love to fight in a war? Nothing negative was communicated. I recommend this book to everyone I can.

Book Review: Bits and pieces
Summary: 1 Stars

Fortunately for me, the book was given to me or I would be tempted to get my money back. Even then, I usually am against throwing books away but nothing would give me greater pleasure when I am done. I feel like he lets a lot of himself out that should be kept in a private journal. Many of his remarks, often found in the parenthesis shows his ignorance and immaturity. While some might find it funny and know him personally, I do not and find it disrespectful.

Although there are good things to take away from the book, I have a hard time wanting to because I think his message is skewed. I think a lot of verses are taken out of context and used for his benefit. There are a lot of unnecessary stories and tid bits that do nothing but take away from his dwindling message.

I am an advocate for helping the poor, and do so often but he mentions that he wants a life of "singleness and poverty". I would really like to challenge him to go tell the 18 year old who has been left to take care of her 3 siblings because her parents have died from AIDS, who also has an 8 month old who has AIDS because she had to sleep with some man to get food, that he would like to be in her shoes. She would laugh at him. No one that is poor, truly poor, would want to remain poor. The truly poor, the ones sick and starving would not be looking for hand outs from white humanitarians and wanting to flee to the next best place if they enjoyed the humbling experience of being poor. So sure, Shane might enjoy being poor but is he really? Even as he lives among them, he is not truly poor. He will not fully be poor until it truly affects his health, his family, his life and when that does happen, I don't think the message will be encouraging others to join him.

I also think he bashes the rich too much. Someone needs to be able to afford these trips to send people over to build orphanages, homes, schools, send AID, organizations need the donations of the "rich".... Why continue the poor cycle by joining them...wouldn't you rather help them?

Book Review: Brilliant Book
