Book Review: A Big Step UP from Black Order
Summary: 5 Stars
After finishing Black Order - the previous Sigma Force installment - I was beginning to think that this author was washing up a bit, losing the masterful pin that were in the likes of Sandstorm, Amazonia, and Excavation. The Judas Strain proved me wrong. Significantly.
My first impression of the book was a shake of the head, saying, "Not another outbreak of plagues that threatens the earth with extinction." It's been done countless times already, and I have never enjoyed those other attempts (Year Zero comes to mind). But, as I began getting into the plot of this book, I began to realize that this was not just some unknown plague that threatened the earth. The author truely brought this overused plot out of the gutter an into the spotlight for me. And what was the driving force behind this resurrection? The science. The author gave the plague-virus a fresh new look by not having some monkey scratch a traveler and then hop on a plane back home...no, he did entirely more than that. He spun a web that had me guessing the entire time about the origin, the symptoms, and the outcome of this particular virus. The science was truely revealing, interesting, and plausible. That is what made the novel shine.
Then, if you throw in the likes of Marco Polo's expeditions, ancient Angelic Script (predating the oldest Hebrew), pirates, The Guild, Seichan, and a certain couple of captives, you have one heck of a good story here. And that is what The Judas Strain was and is...and good story. Plus, as some of the reviewers here have stated, the author gave us at least one more reason to go out and buy the next installment of the Sigma Force Series, The Last Oracle...but you'll have to read the book to find out what it is...I'll just say that the author should have been doing this in the previous books as well. I know this because I am more impelled to get the next book than ever before.
So, The Judas Strain definately found favor with me (unlike Black Order) and I think that there still is something left in the Sigma Force Series to be had, enjoyed. Much so, in fact. Read the book and see for yourself.
