Book Review: A good read; very familiar.

Here is a book that I was recommended to read. Or should I say, I was recommended to read this author (with her second novel being the better but this was the only one at the local Borders at the time of purchase).
As a writer, Sarah Langan is a wonderful writer. She knows how to create characters very realistically, and developes them and their back stories quite excellently. Some of the characters can be a bit stereotypical with their young love or their single mother life or the alcoholic and so forth, but all in all, even with the flaws, her character creation and story flow she is splendid with. To be completely honest, she develops her characters and towns similar to Stephen King and it would not be insulting to say that she is trying to be a clone of him in a sense; Maine back story, multiple character arcs, working class atmosphere, coming of age, deeply damaged people, etc.
The problem with this story, the Keeper, is many. The town is way too superstitious and seems to accept it as a normal part of life and/or nature. The protagonist's sister is the focus of an unnatural phenomena that is never quite explained why she is the focus. A good portion of the characters are unlikable. Back story of the town and the characters pop up out of no where. So what am I trying to get at: the story, though engrossing, is just not believable enough. There are too many false reactions, easy acceptance, and bizarre plot moments that are so unrealistic.
Okay, so what does that mean? It means that the story is a really good Stephen King clone but without the realism of reaction by the people and their towns. Too many side plots or characters just fade away with no ending. And the ending seems added on just to draw pity on certain characters while trying to influence the reader to hate others.
Should you read this? Sure, it was a good read. Kept my interest. And was enjoyable all the same, flaws or not. I just wish maybe I read her other novel because it seems to be the better of the two based off my friend's opinion.
