Towner Whitney appears to be the perfectly credible and reliable narrator of this story. When she returns to Salem, her birthplace and hometown, after the death of her aunt Eva, she is a reluctant visitor. As she stays on longer than expected, characters from her past begin to appear. Rafferty, May, and a variety of townspeople who know Towner drop in and out of the story; friends and relatives in Towner's current life who also figured prominently in her past.
While not exactly historical fiction, the novel does offer a variety of interesting information about Salem and the witch trials. Cal, a shady character, appears almost immediately, and plays a memorable role throughout the book. A little spooky, very mysterious, and with a surprising twist at the end, The Lace Reader is an enjoyable read.
