The Last Best Book
Jim Collins has captured the best and the saddest parts of baseball in his story The Last Best League. Every summer in small towns across Cape Cod, great baseball players come together to compete in the Cape Cod baseball league. This is where baseball players can be honored or destroyed. With their hopes of making it to the Major Leagues. One of every six players who play in the Cape make it to the Major Leagues. The player's hopes are especially to make it to the Major Leagues, not getting injured, hopefully lead his team to the playoffs and to impress the major league scouts. This is a story about the Chatham A's the most prestigious and well coached team in the league. The coach is John Schiffner a well-respected and nice person. There is Jamie D'Antona, a great hitter from Wake Forest. There is Thomas Pauly, a pitcher from Princeton. Also there is Tim Stauffer a pitcher from Richmond. The most important question is who will make it and why. This story tells the difference between wooden and metal bats and how players have to adjust to the wood at the Cape. It also tells the lure of steroids for players and the why players go into slumps and how they come out. Also the interesting things about major league scouting and how it is done. I recommend this book to anyone who likes baseball. This book shows all the struggles and triumphs. This story is very inspiring if you are baseball player and you will fall in love with it.
