Book Reviews of The Last Vampire : A Novel

Book Review: The Last Vampire
Summary: 4 Stars

Quite an enjoyable read, this book offers it's own history and type of vampire race. Miriam Blaylock, the main character, has many sides and conflicts within herself about the vampires role in today's world. But when she finds herself drawn the same way to a human man, as she would to one of her own kind it gets even more interesting to read. The story draws you in and you are (or at least I was) waiting for things to unfold. But my only negative point with this story was that it became very drawn out at points which are enevitable. Still a very addictive read and an extraordinary evolutionary theory behind the Vampire! To rival Lestat any day if kept going!

Book Review: Forgetful author
Summary: 4 Stars

Before reading this I went and re-read 'The Hunger' so I could recapture the feel and the plot. This is a hugely entertaining novel and I read it straight through in three days. Streiber's theories of vampire history and development are well thought out and highly original but his memory seems to have lapsed between the two books. In the first the heroine's father dies in a shipwreck and yet in this book he died in the Hindenburg disaster. Similarly in the first book the heroine is described as not particularly wealthy but here she has become indescribably rich. Little faults but some of us do read our books that thoroughly. Overall though a welcome addition to the genre which will be enjoyed by most fans.

Book Review: A fairly good sequel...
Summary: 4 Stars

Twenty years on from "The Hunger", the book that spawned this story, we go back to the life of Miriam Blaylock and her lifestyle in modern day New York(although pre 9/11).

Sarah Roberts is back, written back in by a little bit of clumsy yet plausible storyline. It also seems that there are others in a close circle of friends that know more about Miriam than she would have allowed in "The Hunger".

The story delves into a rich backstory about Miriam's race, and what their functions were on Earth. Miriam herself is desperate for a last chance at a baby(sounds a little crazy...but the story is very well explained!) and she's travelling all over the world looking for more of her own kind in the hope of finding a father for a child. What she DOES find is a group of CIA-types that have been destroying vampires for years, and one of them, Paul Ward, is hot on her trail.

The story moves from Asia, to Paris and then back to New York. It's a very fast paced story, and there are a few interesting and surprising plot twists along the way, as well as some great character development.

However, the one down point is that this book ends in an almost unfinished way...a little like "The Hunger" book did; almost too abruptly and as a reader you would have appreciated one more chapter. I can only hope that there is more to come, as there were LOTS of possibilities that need answering!

All in all a good book and an entertaining read, but I highly recommend you read "The Hunger" first to get acquainted with the style of vampire and the kind of characters involved.
