Book Reviews of The Late Great U.S.A.: The Coming Merger With Mexico and CanadaBook Review: Not a conservative argument. Summary: 1 StarsThis author doesn't seem to know the difference between an economic category and a political one. What he attempts to do in this book is argue that based on the fact that there are shared institutions of free economic trade between the North American countries, that it follows that the political borders and very sovereignty of the US government itself is being being "dissolved" into a single North American government. This is just silly. I would like to instruct Mr. Corsi that the free movement of economic goods across a country's border is not the same thing as the "dissolution" of a country's political sovereignty, and that two(or more) countries adopting shared trade institutions doesn't equate to those same countries "dissolving" their national governments into a single supra-national government. Mr. Corsi never-the-less tries to argue that the democratically elected governments of the US, Canada, and Mexico constructing shared economic institutions to coordinate the free trade of goods under NAFTA, is equivalent to having the very national governments of these three countries "dissolved" and replaced by a non-nationally based single supra-national government. If this were true, then there would no longer be a US Congress, a US President, a Canadian Parliment, nor a Canadian Prime Minister elected by and governing these respective countries, as they would have ceased to exist, having been replaced by non-nationally based governing dictortariote. But this is obviously and demonstrably not true. US laws are made and administered by the Congressmen and President who were freely elected by and are democratically accountable to the American people. NAFTA doesn't make and doesn't administer domestic US laws, it doesn't politically govern the US people, nor has it dissolved and replaced the US Congress, US courts, and US Presidency. All NAFTA and the P-P Partnership do is frame the trade laws and trade institutions governing cross-border Mexican, US, and Canadian trade. NAFTA and the P-P Parternership govern the trade relations BETWEEN the three North American countries, they don't administer the very governing ITSELF OF those countries. Corsi's contention that North American trans-national trade institutions have "dissolved" the American people's political soveriegnty and "dissolved" and replaced the US government itself, is thus plainly and demonstrably false. All that NAFTA and the P-P Partnership do is create shared trans-national TRADE institutions and shared trans-national TRADE laws BETWEEN countries, they simply are NOT a form of trans-national political government; they are TRADE institutions, not a government. A simple example would be to compare two US states. Kansas and Texas share the same trans-state Federal trade laws, and their trade disputes are tried in a shared trans-state Federal trade court, but this does NOT thus mean that the Kansas state government governs Texas. Kansas and Texas have separate soveriegn governments apart from their shared trans-state trade laws and institutions. A trade institution simply is NOT a form of political government. Thus, Corsi's attempt to argue that the US's sharing of trans-national trade institutions with Canada and Mexico is the same thing as the US itself being governed politically by those trans-national trade institutions is breathtaking in its sophistry. The only thing that NAFTA and the P-P Partnership govern is TRADE. They are not a GOVERNMENT which has "dissolved" and replaced our national government. The US government is still intact and running the US; why do you think we are currently debating who to elect to it in 2008? If, as Corsi claims, the US government had been "dissolved" and replaced by the P-P Partnership, then there would be no US government to elect a Mitt Romney or Barak Obama to run! Corsi is obviously wrong that the US government has been or is being "dissolved" and replaced (and this elementary failure of comprehension comes from an author who boasts a PhD in Political Science from an Ivy League school no less!).
In addition, the long anti-free trade argument of this book is perplexing coming from an author who claims to be "Conservative". Last time I checked, Conservatism is about free markets and free trade. Mr. Corsi, and his allegedly "Conservative" followers would do well to try reading Conservative economists such as Walter E. Williams, Milton Friedman, and Friedrich Hayek. The freedom of the individual to decide based on free market principles where he can invest his money, who he can do business with, and whose goods he can buy, is at the heart of Conservatism. If Corsi doesn't want to buy Canadian goods, then he can choose not to; but no one claiming to be a "Conservative" should tell me whose goods I should be able to buy. For a Conservative, the free market should decide this. Anyone who thinks that NAFTA is "destroying" the American middle class should undertake the following inquiry: reference America's median income and per capita GDP prior to NAFTA (circa 1990-1991), and compare it to those same figures for last year. America and Americans have become richer because of NAFTA, not poorer. Free markets and free international trade markets create wealth for all countries concerned. If you doubt this, try taking a look at the economies of countries who have cut themselves off from international free trade, such as North Korea, Burma, and Tanzina. Then try naming any country who has become poorer because of participating in international free trade or richer as a result of cutting itself off from international free trade.
Book Review: The Late Great U.S.A. Summary: 5 StarsIf you have a feeling that something just does not seem quite right about the seriousness of this Nation's governing. And, wonder how a Nation can be so drastically divided on so many issues. And, why this Government does everything possible to not enforce our borders, even after 911, screamed for greater security. And, if you wonder how this government can ignore the tremendous loss of economical base since NAFTA, while simultaneously promoting cheap free trade with china. Within the covers of this book you will find the answers. Jerome Corsi, delivers a creiable footnoted investigative research, whereby international industrials and capitalist have partner with elite Republican and Democrat leadership forming the genesis of a shadowy governmental agreements that ultimately could subvert the sovereignty of each of three nations. He uncovers the working formation of a shadow partnership formed from leadership and committees of Mexico, Canada, and United States that is well on its way to duplicating the supragovernment duped on the European, the European Union. International funding (typical of many) is in place for the construction of (1/4 mile multi-lane corridor highway) Trans-Texas Corridor from Loredo, Tx to Kansas City, where Kansas City, will become one of the inland 'custom stops'. Shipments will flow freely from Mexican Pacific ports trucked or trained freely through the corridor to Kansas City Inland Customs, and then released for delivery on other corridors. The North American Union is the brain child of Robert Pastor and implemented by political and industrial opportunist for the advantage of their own greed, one can only conclude this will be at the expense of liberty as we know it and at the demise of the middle class.
