Book Reviews of The Legend of Zelda, Volume 2

Book Review: A fitting adaptation of the best Zelda game ever.
Summary: 5 Stars

As a fan of the Legend of Zelda games, when I found out that there was a manga of the same name I had to pick it up, and I'm very glad I did. Ocarina of Time is, in my opinion, the greatest game of the entire series and thus is a fitting game to be adapted first.

Link is a Kokiri, a forest sprite. All forest sprites have a fairy. Except Link. One day, the Great Deku Tree, lord of the forest, is infected with an evil curse and sends Navi the fairy to meet Link. Together, they defeat the curse on the Deku Tree. However, the Tree tells them that a great Evil is threatening their kingdom of Hyrule, and only Link and Navi can stop it! They must find Princess Zelda and stop the evil Ganondorf, and this leads them on an adventure like no other.

This first volume looks at Link's initial quest for the 3 Spiritual Stones, as well as his exploits after finding the Master Sword, whilst volume two is about his quest to defeat the evil Ganondorf and contains some bonus material that wasn't included in the games either.

For those of you who haven't played these games, Link is usually mute and never speaks. Of course this doesn't hold up in a manga and so he joins in conversation quite a bit, and whilst this may shatter the illusion for some people, I believe the dialogue is well written enough that it shouldn't bother anyone. Link's speeches are never boring, and the other characters all speak and act as you would expect if you were playing through a game.

The art in these volumes is exactly as you would expect from a manga, very humorous and amusing for the most part and then serious and edgy when battles occur. There are a few panels that become a little difficult to decipher when there's lots of black around, but nothing to hinder your reading.

As an interpretation of the game, these are very well done. Unlike the Kingdom Hearts Manga which I read, this does not seem rushed and the story flows at it's own pace. Kingdom Hearts cut down an enormous game into 4 volumes which ran from place to place at breakneck speed, eliminating most of the story. Ocarina of Time is the opposite, it all feels natural. Whilst some areas of the game seem shafted, they're still included in some form, such as the Water Temple, or they're altered a little like the Dark Link battle.

Overall, these are fantastic volumes which expose more of the games story than the game does, whilst not wrecking the game continuity in the slightest. If you like Zelda, buy these! If you like a good little fantasy romp, get these! If you're Ganondorf, GO AWAY!
