Book Reviews of The Lions of Lucerne (Scot Harvath 1)Book Review: Another winner for Mr. Thor... Summary: 5 Stars
This book was freaking awesome! I wish I could be more intellectual but I don't feel like it. I was in a slight book funk (tons of books to choose from, but nothing really jumping out at me) and trying to figure out what to read next. For reasons that I'm sure can only be tracked back to my childhood, I simply ABHOR reading mass market sized books. My phobia is so bad that I don't even peruse books in that format because of the size, the feel, and the size of the font.
So what made me choose one this time? Two words: Brad Freaking Thor! This guy has the political-non-stop-thriller genre on lock!! And this book had the perfect formula to pull me from my slight book funk. I choose this book because of the premise that someone would actually have the cojones to kidnap the president! Knowing Scot Harvath, there would be hell to pay! And there was... oh my goodness there was!!
Brad Thor's books are always fast paced and quick, but `Lions' easily tops the list as one of the fastest ones and also one of his better ones. I laugh in the face of people who say "this isn't real" or "the hero is to over-the-top". Ummm... yeah! This book is FICTION Mc. Fly! I read books to escape and if that means that the story takes on a small air of disbelief, I'm completely OK with that. That being said, I think Thor's insight to our government and our government's enemies are uncanny and only add to his stories.
This was the perfect `take me away with one heck of story' story. Scot Harvath is a perfect hero that takes out perfect villains in a not so perfect world and I'm the perfect guy to read them.
Book Review: Bold & Believable Summary: 4 Stars
I am always prepared to make allowances for an author's first efforts, but didn't have to in this case. With a bold and plausible plot right out of today's headlines, I found this book to be an exciting and realistic read. Scot Harvath is a rare hero, driven to accomplish the mission, with the willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done, yet he is likable and thoughtful. I bought the first two books, was halfway through the second and ordered the rest from Amazon. I am now on book for, and it only is getting better.
Book Review: Cannot put this book down! Summary: 5 Stars
I just finished reading this book and on an evening when I was sleepy it kept me awake until 3:00am. Then I couldn't wait to finish it the next day. I am a Tom Clancy fan, but this author will become a new favorite! It is fast paced and visually accurate. I had visited Mt. Pilatus more than 30 years ago - now I want to return for closer inspection!
Book Review: Clancy Meets Fodor's Summary: 4 Stars
Brad Thor's first action packed novel is a hit. While this level of excitement is normal for writers that have "lived the life" (Marcinko, McNabb) Thor used to have a show on the Travel channel. This certainly shows in his books, with comments on specific hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions; but it does not in any way detract from the action.
Overall a good read
Warning: non-stop action and numerous twists may prevent you from putting this book down.
Book Review: Clever Summary: 5 Stars
Do not pass this book up.
I do agree with another reviewer that the protagonist is somewhat too good to be true. It is easy to get past that. The plot is clever, and the villains were well developed. The action is great. I can't wait to read another Thor.
